Overview

An exciting opportunity has become available within the Paediatric Respiratory Service at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, QMC campus. We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual with a passion for delivering high standards of care to join our team. Excellent communication skills are essential to this role. You must be reliable and able to work flexibly in partnership with an experienced clinical support worker as part of our wider multi-disciplinary team.

Following appropriate training, you will undertake clinical and non-clinical duties working autonomously to provide the day-to-day running of the sleep study service and a comprehensive administrative service for the respiratory nursing team.

The post will be 24 hours per week, split over a minimum of 4 days (excluding weekends and bank holidays). The post requires working Thursdays, with flexibility for other working days, ensuring the core service hours of  are covered.

Key job responsibilities
  • Clinical
    • To liaise with families in person, by telephone, e-mail or in writing as appropriate in relation to paediatric sleep study referrals.
    • Following appropriate training and under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, work independently as a member of a team coordinating and organising the sleep study service for children and young people attending Nottingham Children’s Hospital.
    • To run a daily clinic, demonstrating how to use sleep study equipment to ward staff/patients/parents/carers, distributing equipment and answering/signposting any questions they may have.
    • To prioritise workload, particularly urgent studies, providing ward staff with equipment quickly and efficiently for inpatients.
    • To download patient sleep study recordings and return completed reports in a timely manner.
    • To refer any patient concerns to the paediatric respiratory team.
    • Have an up-to-date understanding of safeguarding children and young people.
    • Coordinate the use and maintenance of equipment; ensure equipment servicing is up to date and replacements are available for children in the community while serviced.
    • Liaise with the Medical Equipment Services Unit (MESU) to maintain quality assurance with equipment.
    • Consider and deploy available resources to achieve safe care, including monitoring stock levels of equipment and contacting relevant suppliers.
  • Clerical
    • Competently use hospital IT systems (Care Flow, WebHISS, DHR). Use IT skills to maintain Excel spreadsheets and create Word documents.
    • Book appointments into daily sleep study clinics following time-specified pathways to meet waiting time targets.
    • Assist in development and maintenance of the paediatric sleep studies database.
    • Maintain accurate records of all contacts with the child and family, available to colleagues and senior staff.
    • Assist in implementing audits and patient satisfaction questionnaires identified by the paediatric respiratory team; work with the team to use findings to improve the service.
    • Assist in organising educational study days for the respiratory team as appropriate.
  • Communication
    • Communicate effectively with the multidisciplinary team to promote efficient patient care and maintain clear channels of communication. Attend meetings and take minutes as appropriate.
    • Report all accidents and untoward incidents to the nurse in charge and complete incident forms in line with Trust policy.
    • Maintain accurate patient records (written and electronic). Ensure confidentiality of information and correct storage of records.
    • Liaise with other wards and departments for co-ordination of patient care and smooth running of sleep studies service.
  • Personal Professional
    • Have appropriate knowledge and understanding of Trust policies; demonstrate a professional manner and confident approach at all times.
    • Take responsibility for completing and delivering work to a high standard within allocated timescales.
    • Undertake mandatory and job-specific training and participate in annual performance reviews with the Paediatric Respiratory Nurse Specialist.
    • Use initiative in planning daily and weekly routines; work without constant supervision where possible and seek supervision when needed.
