As a ward manager you would need to ensure that the standards and quality of care given to patients, together with the environment in which care is delivered are maintained at a high standard.

Be an effective leader and role model and will be expected to provide regular direct clinical care and use experience to support the implementation of both clinical and nonclinical governance.

Work flexibly as a member of the ward team to ensure standards are being maintained, evaluated and where necessary improved.

Essential criteria

• NMC Registration
• Degree in Health/Nursing
• Mentoring qualification
• Competent in Medicines management
• Professional Registration in Therapy (preferably)

Desirable criteria

• Completion of all local competency packages
• Research training/experience

Experience

Essential criteria

• 3 years post reg experience
• Evidence of leadership and management experience
• Ability to manage a clinical ward efficiently and effectively
• Supervision of non registered staff, pre-registration and post basic students

Desirable criteria

• Budget management
• Providing staff with feedback on their individual performance and use of the knowledge and skills framework

Communication and Relationship Skills

Essential criteria

• Able to present and receive complex information within the multi professional team
• Team player who can initiate, delegate and complete projects
• Ability to support colleagues, patients and relatives/carers in distressing circumstances

Desirable criteria

• Demonstrate evidence of providing formal teaching sessions
• Demonstration of team working and ability to work within a team
• Demonstrate leadership for the management of change

Analytical and Judgement Skills

Essential criteria

• Ability to respond to, prioritse and anaylise complex problems/situations and ensure effective interventions are put in place
• Ability to generate and present reports and documents
• Deal effectively with clinical issues within defined procedures/guidelines

Desirable criteria

• Demonstrate a knowledge of current issues related to NHS strategy and policy
• Use of clinical benchmarking to influence patient care
• Ability in the use of appraisal, personal development review and training needs analysis

Planning and Organisational Skills

Essential criteria

• Can formulate short and long term objectives
• Demonstrate an ability to prioritise own workload and recognise, prioritise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations
• Demonstrate the personal development of members within the team

Desirable criteria

• Ability to effectively lead a team
• Demonstrate effective time management skills
• Experience in strategic planning for a service
