EPSRC DLA Collaborative Studentship

This is a fully funded PhD position—covering tuition, a stipend and research costs—that involves partnership with a non-academic, industrial organization. It provides joint supervision and a 3+ month placement with the partner. The School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Nottingham welcomes applications to recruit one PhD student to this studentship. This is for eligible UK students and provides 4-year funding to commence on the 1st October 2026.

Project:
Atomically thin semiconductors

The PhD student will join a team of scientists at the University of Nottingham and Leonardo UK to develop atomically thin materials (2D semiconductors or 2

DSEM). 2

DSEM behave in a fundamentally different way from their bulk counterparts and their unique electronic properties can support entirely new effects, both individually and when combined to form new structures, from new forms of charge and spin order to ferroelectricity at the atomic scale. The project will advance the precise engineering of 2

DSEM pushing the limits of what can be created, probed and exploited using a bespoke facility (EPI2

SEM) for EPItaxial growth and in-situ analysis of 2

DSEM. Advanced device structures for low-power electronics and nanophotonics will be developed at Nottingham in collaboration with Leonardo UK, a global security company and one of the UK’s largest employers of engineering apprentices and graduates.

Applicants should have (or expect to obtain by the start date)
at least a 2.1 degree in Physics
