Job Purpose

Are you an experienced Quantity Surveyor looking for a rewarding career that combines your passion for construction and stakeholder management with sustainable, large‑scale projects that benefit society and the environment? If so, United Utilities (UU) has exciting opportunities across multiple North West locations.

As a Quantity Surveyor you will lead and support critical teams, managing a portfolio of responsibilities such as contract management, risk analysis, supplier collaboration and commercial operations, while ensuring value for money for our customers.

We champion flexible ways of working: in‑person attendance is required three days per week with the flexibility of hours to support work‑life balance. Initially, more frequent attendance may be expected to familiarise with the site and team.

Accountabilities & Responsibilities
  • Commercially manage a portfolio of Works contracts to ensure delivery in accordance with the terms and protect UU commercial interests.
  • Manage post‑contract commercial processes: early warning and change management, cost forecasting, payments, cost auditing and final accounts.
  • Negotiate and resolve contract claims/disputes and support senior managers in escalated issue resolution.
  • Provide commercial expertise and guidance.
  • Escalate to the Senior Quantity Surveyor/Commercial Manager as needed.
  • Manage conflicting business priorities of various stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with business strategy and policy.
  • Proactively manage and mitigate commercial and business risk.
  • Collaborate across the commercial directorate.
  • Produce and maintain quality commercial and contractual data.
  • Be accountable for contract administration throughout the project lifecycle.

Technical Skills & Experience
  • Quantity Surveying degree or equivalent, or sufficient relevant experience for the RICS Professional Experience Route.
  • Knowledge of key quantity surveying processes, tools and methodologies across the project life‑cycle.
  • Experience with a broad range of standard construction contract forms (preferably including NEC suite).
  • Strong commercial negotiation and resolution skills.
  • Experience managing the commercial function on projects.
  • Line‑management experience.
  • Effective communication with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proficient IT skills, including Microsoft Office, and ability to use IT systems and programmes.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.

  • Quantity Surveying degree or equivalent, or sufficient relevant experience for the RICS Professional Experience Route.
