An ambitious and high-performing Second in Science is required to support the leadership and development of a successful Science department. This role is suited to an outstanding classroom practitioner with strong subject knowledge, high expectations and a proven ability to secure excellent student outcomes. The successful candidate will combine a passion for Science with the drive to contribute strategically to departmental improvement.
In addition to fulfilling the duties of a classroom teacher, the postholder will play a key role in supporting curriculum development, raising standards, and leading the department in the absence of the Head of Department.
- Support the Head of Department in the day-to-day leadership and organisation of the Science faculty.
- Provide strategic direction and assume leadership responsibility in the absence of the Head of Department.
- Promote enthusiasm for Science across the department, encouraging high-quality teaching and a shared commitment to excellence.
- Ensure students make at least expected progress across Key Stages 3 and 4.
- Contribute to the monitoring and implementation of departmental systems, policies and procedures.
- Support the design, delivery and evaluation of a coherent and engaging Science curriculum that promotes progression and high achievement.
- Analyse assessment data and student work to evaluate impact and inform improvement strategies.
- Report on student progress to senior leaders and contribute to whole-school tracking processes.
- Lead and coordinate effective intervention strategies for students who are underachieving.
- Contribute to departmental self‑evaluation and continuous improvement planning.
- Undertake any additional duties reasonably required to ensure the effective operation of the department.
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
- Proven record of successful classroom teaching within Science at KS3 and KS4.
- Strong subject knowledge and the ability to inspire students of all abilities.
- Demonstrated capacity to support leadership and contribute to departmental development.
- Experience using assessment data to raise attainment and monitor progress.
- High expectations of student behaviour, engagement and achievement.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills.
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
