Overview

In this role you will develop cutting‑edge AI approaches to help researchers identify scientific information in historical manuscripts. Specifically, working with the Royal Horticultural Society, we will build new systems to identify information about plant horticulture from historical books and texts stored in libraries. We envisage a smartphone‑based tool to help researchers in a library to quickly identify, parse, and extract relevant information from hard‑to‑read, cluttered and dense pages of text, and potentially, figures within that text.

Responsibilities
  • Develop AI‑based computer vision methods for parsing historical horticulture texts and images.
  • Collaborate with the Royal Horticultural Society to build systems that extract plant horticulture information from historical books and library texts.
  • Design and prototype a smartphone‑based tool for rapid information extraction from dense historical pages.
  • Release and maintain tools or applications that deliver research findings to end users.
  • Contribute to existing research projects, advance an independent research career, and guide junior members of the group.
Qualifications
  • Strong programming expertise, especially in developing AI‑based computer vision methods.
  • Experience in developing and releasing tools or apps for research to end users.
  • Excellent communication skills and proven ability to work in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and publish computer vision approaches across a variety of imaging domains.
  • PhD in computer science with a focus on AI‑based computer vision.
  • Evidence of expertise through publications (including preprints), talks, projects, or open‑source Git repositories.

Your application will be considered on an equal basis, subject to the relevant permission to work in the UK as set out by UK Visas & Immigration.
