Overview

The successful candidate will participate in the 1in 8 airway rota across both QMC and NCH campus critical care units to maximise the clinical experience you gain during this post.

Responsibilities

Clinical responsibilities will include (not exhaustive):

  • Perform daily reviews on ICU patients and present findings on the MDT ward round, with a focus on our major trauma patient population within adult critical care.
  • In conjunction with the consultant support the clinical decision making of junior medical and nursing staff as the senior member of the critical care team.
  • Review critically unwell patients outside of critical care.
  • Admit, stabilise and formulate an initial management plan for critically unwell adults.
  • Competently initiate ventilation, use vasopressors, insert CVC and arterial lines and be able to transfer the critically unwell patient.

Other responsibilities:

  • The successful candidate would be based in the Critical Care department but would have at least two days per week allocated to Research activities.
  • The post holder will be integral to the planning, delivery and dissemination of clinical trial research conducted at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.
  • Direct experience of all components of the research life cycle is expected, including design, drafting and refinement of clinical trial protocol as a named co-investigator; production of trial materials; submission for peer, Sponsor, NHS Research Ethics Committee and local review; design of case report forms; participation in Trial Management Group Meetings; participant screening and consent; research visits with data collection; data cleaning, analysis and dissemination of findings;

    and mentorship within the department.
  • Support the learning and development of other members of the critical care team and participate in clinical governance and quality improvement.
Educational & Other Opportunities

There are regular educational meetings each week including journal clubs, ITU rounds and morbidity meetings. A monthly protected teaching day is provided for Fellows, with optional days on ethics, medical law, professionalism and interview skills. There are hospital and departmental libraries and IT facilities. Research opportunities are available by special arrangement. Critical Care has links with the Academic Departments of Anaesthesia and Surgery and participation in ongoing research and audit programmes will be encouraged.

Training and qualifications

Essential criteria

  • MB ChB or equivalent. Full/limited GMC registration.
  • Successful completion of FY2 training in an NHS setting plus two years of post-foundation training in acute specialties (Anaesthesia, Acute Medicine, Emergency Medicine or ICM).

Desirable criteria

  • Primary FRCA or equivalent higher qualification; ALS or equivalent accredited life support course; ATLS or other trauma course.

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Two years of post-foundation training in acute specialties (Anaesthesia, Acute Medicine, Emergency Medicine or ICM) in an NHS hospital.
  • Completion of Stage 1 Anaesthesia or ICM training or equivalence formally signed off with ROCA / FFICM Stage Certificate.

Desirable criteria

  • Completion of Audit Cycle or quality improvement project; published research.
  • Other evidence of academic achievement including additional qualifications or prizes.
  • Two years' experience of anaesthesia in the UK; twelve months experience of internal medicine in the UK; twelve months of previous critical care medicine in the UK;
    Stage 2 Anaesthesia or ICM Trainee.

Analytical and judgement skills

  • Evidence of continuous career development, including attendance at meetings/courses.
  • Evidence of competence in clinical tasks.

Desirable criteria

  • Attendance at meetings/courses/membership of professional bodies; competence in bronchoscopy, lung ultrasound, focused echocardiography.

Interpersonal skills

Essential criteria

  • Evidence of good written communication, successful team-working, sensitivity to needs of patients and colleagues.

Desirable criteria

  • Formal Human Factors training.

Planning and organisational skills

Desirable criteria

  • Leadership or Management Course.

  • Punctuality, professional appearance and attitudes consistent with GMC guidelines; values and behaviours in line with NUH standards.

Desirable criteria

  • Demonstrates non-medical interests/activities; completed GCP training; experience leading, designing or recruiting to research projects.
