Senior Clinical Fellow - Major Trauma
The closing date is 26 January 2026. We are recruiting to a 12‑month Specialist Fellow in Major Trauma in Adult Critical Care at Nottingham University Hospitals starting in August 2026.
The post is open to all applicants who meet the essential criteria as detailed in the person specification. It is open to all doctors who hold Full/limited registration with the GMC and have successfully completed foundation year 2 training plus a further 2 years in the acute specialities (must have at least 24 months of UK Anaesthesia experience).
The successful candidate would spend 50% of time developing a specialist interest in Major Trauma with opportunities for research, education, quality improvement and development of clinical expertise/skills related to major trauma.
Suitable applicants will be offered opportunity to become faculty on the NUH Trauma, Anaesthesia, Resuscitation and Simulated Care Course and supported in applying for a place on the European Trauma Course.
Main duties of the job ClinicalThe successful candidate will:
- Participate in the 1‑in‑8 airway rota across both QMC and NCH campus critical care units to maximise clinical experience.
- Perform daily reviews on ICU patients and present findings on the MDT ward round, with a focus on our major trauma patient population within adult critical care.
- In conjunction with the consultant support, make the clinical decision for junior medical and nursing staff as the senior member of the critical care team.
- Review critically unwell patients outside of critical care.
- Admit, stabilise and formulate an initial management plan for critically unwell adults.
- Competently initiate ventilation, use vasopressors, insert CVC and arterial lines and be able to transfer the critically unwell patient.
At least one day per week allocated to major trauma which includes participation in clinical duties, service improvement and education.
Attending trauma calls and with appropriate direct supervision and training:
- Perform high quality primary surveys of low, medium, and high injury severity triage patients.
- Resuscitate the unstable major trauma patient.
- Coordinate the initial management of a patient with a high injury severity score as they transition between departments.
- Support the learning and development of other members of the critical care team.
- Participate in clinical governance and quality improvement.

- Evidence of good written communication, successful team‑worker, sensitivity to needs of patients and colleagues.
- Evidence of formal Human Factors training.

- Full GMC registration with licence to practise.
- Successful completion of FY2 training in an NHS setting.
- Primary examination in Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine or Medicine ATLS or equivalent trauma course.
