Opportunity

The Physical Systems Reliability & Resilience research group at FM is seeking knowledgeable, creative, and self-motivated graduate students for a Summer 2026 research internship or Summer/Fall Co-op. Selected candidates will work alongside a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers to protect the value of FM clients’ businesses by developing methods to identify hazards, assess risk, and produce efficient, cost-effective loss prevention solutions.

The internship/co-op will be supervised by senior research staff within the Physical Systems Reliability & Resilience group and offers a unique opportunity to engage in real-world science and engineering problems within the insurance industry. Graduate students in good academic standing who are interested in expanding their research experience beyond academia and who bring expertise in natural hazard risk and resilience assessment are encouraged to apply.

Internship / Co-op Objective

The primary objective of this internship is to develop and calibrate vulnerability curves for risk assessment of buildings subject to climate hazards, leveraging large datasets and incorporating calibration using actual loss claims.

Qualifications:

Required Expertise

  • Graduate student pursuing an advanced degree in Civil Engineering
  • Strong analytical skills with solid knowledge of probability and statistics
  • Programming experience in Python
  • Experience developing fragility or vulnerability functions for natural hazards is a plus
  • Experience with machine learning methods
  • Ability to process and analyze large datasets
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
