Eligibility Requirements
  • Candidates must hold a current and valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tank endorsement in the “Licenses and Professional Certifications” section of the application, or they will not be considered. Applicants invited to interview will be required to produce a copy of their current valid CDL Class A or B reflecting the tank endorsement and a valid Medical Examiner’s Card (MEC) at the time of interview, or they will be immediately disqualified.
  • Incumbents in this class must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, whenever their services are needed; this includes mandatory winter overtime from November 1 through April 30. Various storm events may require employees to stay at work for the duration of the storm, which at times could be up to several days, including holidays and weekends.
  • Incumbents in this class will be required to have a 20-mile residency from the posted job location.
  • Candidates will be required to bring a copy of their master application at the time of interview.
  • The agency will conduct a practicum for the Transportation Maintainer 3 (Payloader Operator) position to evaluate and determine whether an applicant has the skills and qualifications to perform the duties of this position. The practicum will be conducted pursuant to the Department of Transportation Administrative Guidelines for Conducting Practicums and will be part of the interview process.
  • Eligible candidates will be required to be interviewed before being eligible for the skill evaluation practicum.
  • Candidates must show how they meet the required knowledge and experience on their application to proceed further in the hiring process.

The Role
  • The Maintainer 3 performs a range of skilled tasks such as road, bridge, and roadside maintenance and operates complex equipment, especially a payloader. Responsibilities include snow and ice operations, accident response, paving and pothole repair, road sweeping and roadside upkeep, installing/repairing guardrails and drainage, tree removal, and operating and maintaining construction equipment.
