Athletics - Head Coach - Varsity Softball SY)
Join Norwalk Public Schools as the Head Coach for the Varsity Softball team for the school year. The role focuses on coaching student-athletes, developing tactics, and fostering a love for the sport.
Responsibilities- Hold organizational meetings for team prospects and encourage potential athletes to participate.
- Assess players’ skills and assign team positions.
- Develop a regular practice schedule and organize practice time for individual and team development.
- Work with the athletic director to schedule facilities for practices and competition.
- Supervise and assign duties to assistant coaches, as necessary.
- Coach and instruct players individually or in groups on rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques.
- Observe players during competition and practice to determine needs for improvement.
- Determine game strategy based on the team’s capabilities.
- Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior and provide proper supervision of athletes at all times.
- Monitor academic performance of team members to ensure eligibility requirements are met.
- Follow established procedures in the event of an athlete’s injury.
- Confer with parents/guardians regarding the athletic performance of their children.
- Follow state, regional, and district regulations governing the athletics program.
- Model sports-like behavior and maintain appropriate conduct toward players, officials, and spectators.
- Act as a team representative and promote the sport through communication with media, booster clubs, service clubs, and other organizations.
- Follow procedures for the care, maintenance, and requisitioning of equipment, supplies, and uniforms.
- Work with the athletic director to develop a policy for awards and submit a list of award winners at season’s end.
- Participate in special activities such as parents’ night, banquets, awards nights, and pep assemblies.
- Interact positively with staff, students, and parents.
- Promote good public relations through personal appearance, attitude, and conversation.
- Experience working with high school students.
- Knowledge of academic areas affecting athletes.
- Clear and effective communication skills, both oral and written.
- Active listening skills.
- Ability to work effectively with others.
- Organizational and problem‑solving skills.
- Basic knowledge of subject matter relevant to the role.
- Basic computer skills.
- Excellent reading comprehension.
- Excellent math comprehension.
- Minimum High School Diploma required.
- Connecticut coaching certificate.
- Current First Aid/CPR/AED training;
Connecticut Coaching Module #15 certificate. - High school or college coaching experience preferred; head coach, assistant coach, player, or education experience may substitute.
- Three years’ high school coaching experience.
- Effective coaching techniques and skills.
- Knowledge of rules, regulations, strategies, and techniques of softball.
- Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
