The Registered Nurse provides direct patient care that is guided by the American Nurses Association (ANA) scope of practice. The RN collaborates with patients, family, peers, physicians, and other members of the interdisciplinary team in delivering healthcare services. They assess patients’ needs, develop and implement care plans, and evaluate the effectiveness of medical and nursing regimens in accordance with hospital policies, procedures, and standards.

- Complete patient assessment and reassessment as clinically indicated.
- Document detailed information incorporating the plan of care, interventions, and outcomes that reflect the patient’s physical, mental, and emotional status.
- Ensure appropriate documentation based on the level of care the patient is receiving, including transfer and discharge documentation as required.
- Follow the five Rights of Medication Administration and verbalize medication information to patients/family.
- Assess patients prior to administering medications, noting allergies, parameters, potential side effects, effectiveness, and intervening as needed. Reassess and document response according to policy.
- Coordinate and supervise the delivery of nursing care, including delegation of tasks:
- Maintain accountability for delegated care.
- Actively promote a culture of safety:
- Assess patients for potential safety risks.
- Adhere to hospital policies and procedures regarding patient safety and initiate interventions related to identified risks.
- Conduct bedside shift reports and rounds with peers at shift change.
- Document nursing process application in a responsible, accountable, and ethical manner.
- Ensure appropriate patient hand‑off during breaks.
- Assess learning needs of patients/family and plan and provide appropriate instruction using applicable teaching methods. Document responses to teaching.
- Provide care to specific patient populations, regardless of location.
- Deliver patient‑centered care:

- Respect the dignity of all individuals through caring relationships.
- Maintain open lines of communication with active listening.
- Meet accreditation, regulatory, and compliance responsibilities related to the position.

- Perform other duties as assigned within the state nursing scope of practice.
Associate’s Level Diploma in Nursing (DGRE) is required.
Licensing and Certification- Current and unobstructed New York State Registered Nurse license (NY Hospitals).
- Current and unobstructed Connecticut Registered Nurse license (CT Hospitals).
- New graduates awaiting licensure under the Chief Nursing Officer’s discretion (CT only).
- Preferred:
American Nurses Association endorsed Certifications or Academy of Medical‑Surgical Nurses Certification (based on specialty hours of work requirement). - Training:

- Basic Life Support (BLS) – Required for all nursing care areas, required upon hire.
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) – Required for ED, ICU, CCU, SDU PCU, PACU, Cath Lab, GI, LDRP, IR; floating to specific units as competency and location dictate.
- Cardiology-focused units – ACLS required by end of orientation period.
- Philadelphia Area? (PALS) – Required for ED, PACU, pediatric areas.
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) – Required for MCH, NICU, LDRP, DR; due by end of orientation period.
- Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) – Required for LDRP within 1 year of hire.
- Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) – Required for select ED locations; within 1 year of hire.
- Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course (ENPC) – Required for ED RN; either PALS or ENPC within 1 year of hire.
- Transcarotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR) – Required for specific ICU/PACU locations; within 1 year of hire.
- Additional de‑escalation technique training (CPI or others) – Behavioral Health, ED; float pool; 6 months of hire.
- S.T.A.B.L.E – Stable Care of Sick Infants – OB (NDH Only); 6 months of hire.
- Chemotherapy Certification – Inpatient Oncology; 1 year of hire.
- Manual: significant manual skills, motor coordination, and finger dexterity.
- Occupational: some occupational risk.
- Physical Effort: medium to heavy effort; may require exerting up to 35 lbs.
- Physical Environment: exposure to dirt, odors, noise, human waste, etc.
