Description Of Work

Position Definition:
Performs general custodial, cleaning, and minor maintenance duties to ensure library buildings, adjacent walks, grounds, and equipment are maintained in a clean, safe, sanitary, and functional condition. The position provides assistance to officials, staff, patrons, and visitors as necessary and works in coordination with the City’s building maintenance staff to support safe and efficient facility operations.

General Duties
  • Perform routine and deep cleaning of library buildings, including rooms, hallways, restrooms, offices, stairways, and public areas.
  • Sweep, mop, buff, strip, and wax floors using appropriate equipment; vacuum rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture, and blinds.
  • Dust and clean furniture, fixtures, and equipment; wash walls, ceilings, woodwork, windows, doors, and sills.
  • Empty wastebaskets and ensure proper recycling and disposal of refuse; replenish restroom and cleaning supplies.
  • Set up, arrange, and break down furniture and equipment for meetings, programs, and events.
  • Perform minor maintenance and repair tasks using hand tools, such as replacing light bulbs, making small adjustments, and reporting non-routine repairs to the appropriate department.
  • Assist with seasonal grounds maintenance, including mowing lawns, clearing leaves and debris, and maintaining entrances, sidewalks, and walkways.
  • Operate snow blowers and shovels to remove snow and ice from entrances and walkways as required.
  • Coordinate with building maintenance staff regarding scheduled services such as carpet cleaning, window washing, and other facility needs.
  • Maintain an inventory of custodial and maintenance supplies and equipment; report needs to supervisor.
  • Conduct routine checks of assigned buildings at the beginning and end of shifts to ensure spaces are ready for use and secured as appropriate.
  • Follow all applicable safety rules, procedures, and guidelines, including the proper handling and use of cleaning chemicals and equipment.
  • Assist with deliveries and the movement of supplies and materials within and between library locations as needed.
  • Complete basic work documentation and communicate building conditions, maintenance needs, and completed work to the supervisor.
Additional Duties

Participates in general cleaning, painting and repair work. Uses hand tools and power tools in making minor maintenance repairs. Provides assistance to officials, staff, visitors and other employees as necessary. Checks building at beginning and end of shifts.

Working Conditions
  • Position may require work during evenings and weekends based on operational needs.
  • Work involves regular physical activity, including bending, kneeling, lifting, and carrying objects weighing up to approximately 60 pounds.
  • Work is performed indoors and outdoors and may involve exposure to varying weather conditions, dust, odors, cleaning chemicals, and biological waste.
  • Occasional use of ladders and commercial cleaning equipment is required.
Supervised By

Receives general supervision from the Director of Norwalk Public Library and/or their designee.

Skills And Abilities
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions and work according to established procedures and schedules.
  • Ability to interact courteously and effectively with staff, patrons, and the public.
  • Reliability, professionalism, flexibility, and accountability are required.
  • Knowledge of standard custodial methods, materials, and equipment used in commercial or institutional settings.
  • Knowledge of safe handling and mixing of cleaning chemicals and the ability to follow safety-related instructions.
  • Ability to perform minor maintenance tasks and recognize when specialized repairs are needed.
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision and as part of a team.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required.
  • Prior experience in custodial, facilities, or building maintenance work is required; experience in a library or public facility setting is preferred.
