Summary
The Cardiac Monitor Technician is responsible for continuously monitoring cardiac rhythms of patients, identifying and reporting arrhythmias, and supporting clinical staff in maintaining patient safety and care. This role ensures timely recognition and communication of changes in cardiac rhythm to the healthcare team.
Responsibilities- Monitor Cardiac Rhythms:
Continuously observes and analyzes cardiac rhythms on telemetry monitors for assigned patients. Identifies and records patient’s rhythm every 8 hours. - Identify Abnormalities:
Recognize arrhythmias, heart blocks, and other cardiac irregularities, promptly reporting significant changes to the nursing staff. - Document Rhythm Strips:
Accurate documentation of rhythm interpretations, noting changes, maintaining patient records, and notifying nursing staff of the changes. Documenting forms for the patients’ record, cardiac tracings, and measurements. - Communication:
Communicates to nursing staff as necessary in regards to proper lead placement, battery changes, verifying cardiac rhythms and need for escalation of care. Ability to call code/RRT when a life‑threatening dysrhythmia is identified. - Equipment Maintenance:
Troubleshoot telemetry equipment issues and escalate as necessary to biomedical support. - Performs other duties as assigned.
- Fulfills all compliance responsibilities related to the position.
- Successful completion of the 2‑day EKG interpretation class.
- Must obtain a passing score of 80% or higher on the EKG interpretation exam within 90 days of higher.
- Previous experience in a hospital setting or Cardiac Monitoring.
- Experience with interpretation of cardiac rhythms.
- Education of the Philips monitoring system.
- Manual:
Some manual skills/motor coordination & finger dexterity. - Occupational:
Little or no potential for occupational risk. - Physical Effort:
Sedentary/light effort. May exert up to 10 lbs. force. - Physical Environment:
Generally pleasant working conditions.
