Description

Works under the direct supervision of a registered nurse while delivering safe and effective care to the patient during the intra-operative period. Provides technical care to the surgical patient through the role of the scrub assistant. Effectively interacts with patients of all ages and health care team members, while maintaining the surgical department standards.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains a sterile environment and practices the principles of aseptic technique. This includes maintaining appropriate sterile/unsterile boundaries during surgery, donning sterile gown and gloves, ensuring the integrity of sterile packages, and identifying breaks in sterile technique.
  • Demonstrates the proper selection of instrumentation based on the scheduled procedure. This includes checking the case cart, preparing the surgical room, and communicating with the Circulating RN.
  • Utilizes correct methods of cleaning and disinfection for different types of instruments. This includes preparing opened trays and instruments for decontamination, removing broken instruments, and disassembling used loaner instruments.
  • Assists with positioning of the patient, maintaining correct patient body alignment based on the scheduled procedure. This includes having appropriate positioning devices available, maintaining the patient's body in correct anatomical alignment, and communicating patient safety concerns.
  • Accurately performs surgical counts according to established standards for preventing retained surgical items. This includes performing initial baseline counts, dispensing radiopaque surgical soft goods, and taking caution to ensure all soft goods are returned in their entirety.
  • Performs and follows the environment of care practices according to standards for the perioperative setting. This includes facilitating movement of the patient and personnel, high-low dusting of the surgical rooms, and assisting with OR room cabinet cleaning.
  • Follows the Hospital Policy and AORN recommended practices for surgical attire. This includes changing into facility-approved freshly laundered surgical attire, removing jewelry, and removing undergarments that extend above the scrub top neckline.
  • Performs other duties as assigned and fulfills all compliance responsibilities related to the position.

Other Information

Required:

Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program.

Minimum Experience:

zero to six months. Desired:
Must have and maintain Certification as a Surgical Technologist and 1-3 years of experience.

Very Heavy effort. May exert up to 50 lbs. force. Physical Environment:
