Air-Cooled Chiller Technician — Job Description
Position Summary: The Air-Cooled Chiller Technician is responsible for the inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of air-cooled chiller systems and related HVAC equipment. This role ensures optimal system performance, efficiency, and reliability for commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities while delivering excellent customer service and accurate documentation.
Key Responsibilities- Perform preventive maintenance on air-cooled chillers and ancillary equipment.
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and control issues on chiller systems.
- Troubleshoot compressors, condenser fans, refrigerant circuits, and heat exchangers.
- Perform leak detection, evacuation, charging, and recovery in accordance with EPA regulations.
- Inspect and test chiller controls, safety devices, wiring, contractors, and sensors.
- Conduct vibration, superheat, and subcooling analysis to verify system performance.
- Calibrate controls and verify sequence of operation.
- Maintain accurate service records, work orders, and maintenance logs.
- Provide repair recommendations and communicate findings to supervisors/customers.
- Respond to emergency service calls and support after-hours work as needed.
- Follow company safety standards, OSHA guidelines, and environmental regulations.
- Assist with startup and commissioning of new chiller installations.
- Work collaboratively with service coordinators and project managers.
- 5+ years’ experience servicing air-cooled chillers (preferred).
- Strong knowledge of refrigeration theory and HVAC fundamentals.
- Ability to read electrical schematics and control diagrams.
- Proficiency with digital gauges, multimeters, microns, vacuum pumps, and recovery units.
- Valid EPA 608 Universal Certification (required).
- Experience with manufacturers such as Trane, Carrier, Daikin, York, or McQuay is a plus.
- Strong problem-solving and diagnostic ability.
- Professional communication with customers and team members.
- High attention to detail and documentation accuracy.
- Self-motivated and able to work independently.
Work Environment Requirements
- Ability to lift 50+ lbs.
- Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and in mechanical rooms.
- Availability for on-call rotation or overtime as required.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Technical school or apprenticeship preferred.
