Under general direction and within guidelines set by policies, rules, and regulations, this position is responsible for performing craft level and senior crew member duties in the installation, construction and maintenance of Public Works projects. Projects include: storm water systems, subsurface drains, storm drainage ways, bridge culverts, silt basins and roadways. This position transports, loads and unloads various equipment, supplies, and/or materials used in projects.
The Construction Crew Member Senior could be required to perform other duties in other departments within Public Works as assigned by the Director.
Construction
- Constructs or assists in the construction and installation of equipment and material related to storm water systems.
- Constructs or assists in the construction and installation of equipment and material related to concrete flumes, sidewalks and curbs and gutters.
- Constructs or assists in the construction and installation of equipment and material related to subsurface drains including mix mortar and laying block and brick.
- Constructs or assists in the construction and installation of erosion control preventive measures for Public Works projects.
- Operates heavy truck-trailer in transporting equipment to and from the job site.
- Operates and maintains both light and heavy equipment, machinery, and tools used in construction, maintenance and repair of Public Works infrastructure systems, specifically: all vehicles and equipment; and all required hand tools used for the purposes of various construction, masonry, concrete finishing, and mechanical applications.
- Constructs or assist in the setting of forms for concrete; pours and finishes concrete sidewalks, curb and gutters, flumes and driveways; lays bricks/cement block to construct storm inlet boxes and other such structures.
- Performs manual work duties associated with construction, maintenance, and repair of City, storm drains, roadways, and all other structures; manual duties include the ability to shovel materials such as asphalt, sand, stone, or topsoil; the ability to dig holes or trenches; the ability to load and unload necessary construction materials from truck or trailer.
- Performs or assists in the maintenance of the City’s storm drain system.
- Performs or assists in the maintenance of the City’s subsurface storm drain system.
- Performs or assists in the maintenance of erosion control devices on Public Works projects as needed.
- Performs or assists in the maintenance of roadways, public right-of-way, sidewalks, curb and gutter and the levee flood gate maintenance program.
- Operates asphalt truck and performs asphalt patch work.
- Landscapes as needed to complete public works projects to include laying sod, seeding, shrubbery, fill dirt, topsoil etc.
- Operates dump truck.
- Inspects equipment prior to use and reports necessary equipment repairs that are needed; performs maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment, and tools in good working condition including greasing and cleaning, maintaining fluid levels.
- Sets up and maintains safety work zone at job site using traffic cones and warning signs; flags traffic as assigned; leaves job site in a safe condition for the public at the end of the day.
- Gathers and loads equipment, tools and materials for use on projects.
- Performs other reasonably duties in a safe manner as assigned by immediate supervisor or other supervisors as required.
High school diploma or equivalent with experience in the construction and maintenance of subsurface drainage, forming and finishing concrete structures, masonry skills; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Qualifications- Possession of a valid, State of Alabama driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle. Requirement exists at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment.
