ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Under general direction and within guidelines set by policies, rules, and regulations, this position is responsible for performing craft level and crew leader duties in the installation, construction and maintenance of Public Works projects. Projects include: storm water systems, subsurface drains, storm drainage ways, bridge culverts, silt basins and roadways. The Crew Chief reacts quickly and effectively to notification from the supervisor of infrastructure concerns affecting either the environment or the quality of life of the citizens.

This position could be required to perform other duties in other departments within Public Works as assigned by the Director.

Construction
  • Constructs and installs equipment and material related to storm water systems.
  • Constructs and installs equipment and material related to concrete flumes, sidewalks and curbs and gutters.
  • Constructs and installs equipment and material related to subsurface drains including mix mortar and experience in laying block and brick.
  • Constructs and installs erosion control preventive measures for Public Works projects.
Maintenance
  • Maintenance and inspection of heavy equipment.
  • Assists in the maintenance of the City’s storm water system.
  • Assists in the maintenance of the City’s subsurface storm drain system.
  • Maintains erosion control devices on Public Works projects as needed.
  • Assists in the maintenance of roadways, public right-of-way, sidewalks, curb and gutter and the levee flood gate maintenance program.
  • Performs asphalt patch work as needed.
General Duties
  • Landscapes as needed to complete public works projects to include laying sod, seeding, shrubbery, fill dirt and topsoil and any other act needed to improve the appearance of a completed Public Works projects.
  • Operates dump truck and asphalt truck as needed.
  • Planning and instruction of city infrastructure projects, including supervision and overseeing on-site.
  • Performs other reasonably duties in a safe manner as assigned by immediate supervisor or other supervisors as required.
Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent with experience in the construction and maintenance of Public Works projects, including experience in leading the work of other employees in a successful manner; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in the construction, installation, and maintenance of infrastructure systems preferred.

Special Qualifications
  • Possession of a valid, State of Alabama driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle. Requirement exists at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment.
  • Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances and rules involved in the operation of motor vehicles.
  • Knowledge of the various materials, methods and practices and equipment used in the construction, maintenance and repair of storm water systems.
  • Knowledge of the materials normally used and suitable for pipe cushion (bedding) and back fill; placement and compaction requirements.
  • Knowledge of the need for proper location and construction of PAMs, inlets and catch basins.
  • Knowledge and understanding of survey stations, levels, elevations, grades and slopes and ability to shoot grade.
  • Knowledge to occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions in general construction and maintenance operations particularly as these requirements relate to work around construction equipment, trench excavations and traffic control around the work site (flagmen, signs, barricades and cones, etc.)
  • Knowledge of City ordinances, policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other similar programs).
  • Skill in planning and organizing work.
  • Skill in utilizing such office equipment as a calculator, typewriter, facsimile machine, and copier.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations; establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the general public.
