Position Summary
The Structured Cabling Technician I is an entry‑level field position responsible for assisting with the installation, labeling, testing, and documentation of low‑voltage cabling systems. This role focuses on learning industry standards, safe work practices, and foundational cable installation techniques while supporting senior technicians and leads. Technician I is expected to demonstrate reliability, eagerness to learn, strong work ethic, and the ability to follow direction on commercial, industrial, and technology‑infrastructure projects.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Cable Installation & Pathways
- Assist with installation of Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A, coax, fiber, speaker cable, and control wiring
- Pull and route cable through conduit, J-hooks, trays, raised floors, and wall cavities
- Support basic termination tasks under supervision (keystone jacks, patch panels, connectors)
- Install back boxes, faceplates, fire‑caulk, and mounting hardware as directed
- Help maintain organized cable pathways and adhere to bend radius, dressing, and support standards
- Perform basic labeling of cables, jacks, and racks according to project standards
- Assist with cable testing using company‑approved testers (continuity, tone/probe, basic certifiers)
- Document results and report issues to senior techs
- Proper use and care of hand tools: snips, punch‑down tools, strippers, basic power tools, etc.
- Maintain assigned tool kit in clean, working order
- Transport and stage materials, ladders, and equipment as needed
- Follow all safety procedures, including PPE requirements and ladder safety
- Maintain a clean jobsite, remove trash, and neatly organize materials
- Assist in daily tasks provided by Lead Tech or Foreman
- Represent the company professionally with clients, partners, and coworkers
- Communicate clearly with leads and teammates for instructions and task updates
- Ask questions when unsure—actively work to build skill and industry knowledge
- Follow documented installation standards and best practices
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Basic understanding of hand tools and construction trades
- Ability to lift 50+ lbs, climb ladders, and work on feet for extended periods
- Ability to work in ceilings, crawl spaces, and other confined spaces
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
- Ability to follow instructions and work in a team environment
- Prior experience in construction, electrical, or low‑voltage work (Preferred)
- Basic knowledge of structured cabling, telecommunications, or networking (Preferred)
- Familiarity with ANSI/TIA cabling standards (Preferred)
