Join our amazing team as a Cooking Instructor. This position is responsible for planning, leading, implementing and engaging cooking classes for participants of various skill levels and ages. The Cooking Instructor ensures all participants' safety and satisfaction by maintaining a clean and organized workspace, adhering to food preparation standards in Illinois. Demonstrates commitment to the Mission, Vision and Guiding Principles of the District.

$30.00 Per Hour (DOQ)

This is a full-time, exempt position, Monday – Friday 3:30 PM - 4:30 PM, plus prep time.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Professionally develops class materials, including a class calendar and syllabus containing curriculum, activities and goals for an assigned class or program.
  • Determines supplies needed, orders or assists in securing them and maintains an updated inventory.
  • Establishes operational procedures and communicates them to staff and participants.
  • Effectively acts as a liaison between participants, participants' parents, and the Recreation Supervisor, communicating program information on a consistent basis.
  • Supervises participant drop‑off and pick‑up following established guidelines.
  • Enforce proper food handling and kitchen safety protocols to ensure the well‑being of all participants.
  • Maintain a clean and organized teaching space, including sanitizing surfaces and equipment after each class.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly worksite at all times.
  • Diligently follows and adheres to all safety policies and procedures.
  • Collaborates with internal and external customers in a positive manner.
  • Follows safe work practices.
  • Attends staff meetings and trainings as required.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent;
Culinary Arts degree or related certification preferred. Two (2) years of experience teaching/leading group activities in an educational, recreational or childcare setting. Proven ability in cooking is required.

  • Within two weeks of hire, employees are required to complete the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) online Mandated Reporter Training.
  • CPR/AED Certification or ability to obtain within three (3) months of hire

Skills & Abilities

  • Plan, direct and conduct activities to meet stated program goals
  • Able to communicate effectively with co‑workers and the public in a professional manner during stressful situations
  • Able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with children and adults
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing

Knowledge

  • Planning, leading and conducting educational programs for children
  • Hands‑on experience working with children
  • Current trends in recreational programs and the field of culinary education

  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Over 50 pounds with assistance. Working in teams will also assist workers with heavier activities at various sites. Lifting also requires bending, stooping, carrying and twisting.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
