Major Responsibilities- Prepare the patient for ophthalmological examination, taking relevant ocular and medical history.
- Perform a range of ophthalmic duties including visual acuity, color vision, lensometry, pupil testing, axial length measurement, estimation of anterior chamber angle, tonometry, auto refraction, ocular ultrasonography, ophthalmic photography, visual fields, automated keratometry, corneal topography and external photography.
- Assist in and ensure delivery of complete ophthalmic care, including instillation of diagnostic ophthalmic drops, ointments per standing MD orders, and use of ocular dressings, shields, medications, laser treatment, and minor surgical procedures.
- Ensure equipment is in proper working order for patient safety and notify appropriate personnel when a problem is identified.
- Maintain adequate stock of medical/ophthalmic supplies in exam and test rooms.
All responsibilities are essential job functions.
Position Qualifications License/Certification/Education- Certification as an Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology required within one year from date of hire.
- Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) required; or must become certified within six months of date of hire.
- Must maintain current BLS certification every two years.
Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed may be substituted for the above requirements.
