Join the National Grid Energy Distribution team as a 2026 Fitter Advanced Apprenticeship holder in Northampton. You will develop skills in high‑voltage power network construction and maintenance while earning a City & Guilds Level 2 qualification in Electrical Engineering.
AboutThe Role
The apprenticeship programme lasts approximately three years. The first 12 weeks involve induction at a Training Centre. Following that you will receive on‑job training under a qualified Fitter and a formal assessment.
A Power Networks Fitter is responsible for the safe construction, maintenance and repair of the electrical power network. You will work on distribution systems up to 66 kV (or 132 kV in a Projects team). Fitters are fitting engineers who work in and around substations, using electrical knowledge and skills to install and maintain high‑voltage plant and apparatus including transformers, switch gear, and cable terminations.
Key Responsibilities- Construct distribution substations and install plant
- Carry out routine inspection, maintenance and repairs of substation and protection equipment
- Install and terminate secondary wiring (small wiring)
- Record asset routes, details and positions
- Record plant details
- Test earthing, voltage, phasing and phase rotation
- Write outage requests and switching programmes for simple outages
- Strong communication – able to speak with customers, colleagues and internal stakeholders with confidence.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Safety awareness – follow safety instructions, use protective equipment, wear protective clothing.
- Resilience and willingness to learn – genuinely passionate about your career and committed to studying. Curious problem solving.
- Minimum age 18 by the start date (1 September 2026).
- GCSE English at Grade A*‑C / Level 2 equivalent.
- GCSE Mathematics at Grade A*‑C / Level 2 equivalent.
- GCSE Science at Grade A*‑C / Level 2 equivalent or BTEC Science Level 2.
- Two other GCSEs A*‑C / Level 2 in any subject.
- Alternatively a recognised Level 3 qualification in Electrical Engineering plus GCSE Grade C/4 in Maths and English.
- Proof of qualifications required before appointment.
- Successful DBS check.
- Competitive starting salary of £18,514, increasing by year: year 2 – £24,938; year 2½ – £32,473; year 3 – £37,770; completion – £43,491.

Additional InformationStart date:
