As a Sister/Charge Nurse you will be responsible for providing effective nursing leadership to a team of nurses working within the Emergency Department.

You will be expected to take charge of the department, coordinating the day-to-day activities which will provide you with the opportunity to develop your managerial and shift leader skills.

The successful applicant will be required to work and manage all areas within the department and demonstrate a professional manner, clinical expertise with good communication skills in all aspects of their work.

You must be comfortable working in a busy environment juggling the different demands typical of a nursing role like this and must possess the courage to do what is right for our patients.

You will be responsible for the day‑to‑day staff management of the team alongside the Nurse Managers.

Supporting Clinical Excellence

Demonstrate specialist expertise and professional knowledge acquired through post‑registration academic, clinical, leadership and management development. Work as a role model for professional practice.

  • Undertake face‑to‑face autonomous assessment and referral of patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed presentations in the Emergency Department (ED) to the appropriate pathway.
  • Liaise with the onsite GP, ED Consultants, ED Doctors, ED Nurses and MDT to ensure appropriate referrals and safe, efficient patient care.
  • Ensure that patients receive high‑quality clinical care decisions, delivered in a timely manner.
  • Supply and administer medicines in line with Patient Group Directives and within scope of practice.
  • Ensure complete and accurate documentation.
Professional Responsibilities
  • Adhere to the NMC or HCPC Code of Professional Conduct and at all times work within own scope of professional practice.
  • Maintain confidentiality with regard to information pertaining to patients and staff.
  • Maintain a professional manner and act as a positive role model for all members of the ED team.
  • Ensure accurate record‑keeping and documentation in line with local policy and NMC or HCPC Code of Professional Conduct.
  • Attend yearly appraisal with line manager and maintain registration.
  • Maintain a professional portfolio which will meet the requirements of NMC revalidation.
Managerial Responsibilities
  • Manage people and financial resources to ensure the effective operation of the team for which he/she is responsible. Ensure effective skill‑mix and appropriate caseload management at all times.
  • Allocate work and assess performance of the team members objectively against set criteria/competencies. Provide clear feedback to team members in a way that is conducive to maintaining and improving performance.
