Senior Design Engineer

We’re looking for a Senior Design Engineer to join the Barclays team. The role involves collaborating with stakeholders to understand their needs and requirements, and designing and implementing solutions that balance technology risks against business delivery, driving consistency.

• Design and develop solutions as evolving products that meet business requirements, applying modern software engineering practices and automated delivery tooling.
• Targeted design activities using workload placement strategy to maximize cloud capabilities such as elasticity, serverless, containerization.
• Create best practice designs that incorporate security principles (defence in depth, blast radius reduction) meeting the bank’s resiliency expectations.
• Balance risks and controls to deliver agreed business and technology value.
• Adopt standardised solutions where appropriate; if none fit, contribute to their evolution.
• Support operational teams by fault finding and performance issue resolution, leveraging available tooling.
• Perform solution design impact assessments covering risk, capacity, cost and estimate project change and ongoing run costs.
• Develop architecture inputs required to comply with governance processes, including privacy, security and records management artefacts.

• Defining architecture for hybrid/multi‑cloud (AWS, Azure, GCP) solutions – create frameworks, reference architectures, and design patterns.
• Designing microservices and API strategies (REST/Graph
  
  QL, API Gateway, load balancers).
• Implementing event‑driven and domain‑driven architectures.
• Designing data architecture: conceptual, logical and physical models, data lineage, masking, compliance (GDPR, DPDP).
• Ensuring security & privacy by design: IAM, encryption, regulatory adherence.
• Designing CI/CD pipelines and automating deployments (Jenkins, Git Lab CI).
• Driving observability: logging, monitoring, tracing, SLOs.
• Optimizing cloud cost and ensuring resilience (DR, HA).
• Collaborating with stakeholders; communicating trade‑offs and decisions.
• Documenting architecture with diagrams, API specs, data flows, ADRs.
• Prior experience within the banking domain.

• Contribute to strategy, drive requirements, make recommendations for change, plan resources, budgets and policies, manage continuous improvement.
• When managing a team: define jobs, plan for departmental needs, counsel performance, influence pay decisions, lead specialists, support strategic priorities.
