Overview

We have an exciting opportunity for a full-time Gynaecology Lead Specialised Nurse Sonographer at Northampton General Hospital to join the Gynaecology Emergency Assessment Clinic / Gynae SDEC service. The role leads the nursing team and the Gynae emergency service, working closely with the Lead Consultant to undertake gynaecology and early pregnancy scanning and provide a Nurse Led service for women with emergency gynaecology and early pregnancy problems.

This is a Nurse Led service with decision-making as an essential requirement. The post supports the Trust's strategy towards Same Day Emergency Care in this specialist area. You will work within established quality standards of practice, adhering to ultrasound guidelines (BMUS, RCOG, NICE) for clinical excellence. You will demonstrate clinical excellence in nursing with expertise in emergency gynaecology and early pregnancy care.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the nursing team and the Gynae Emergency service; manage day-to-day workload and resources.
  • Undertake Gynaecology and Early Pregnancy scanning to support a Nurse Led service.
  • Adhere to ultrasound guidelines and national standards to ensure clinical excellence (BMUS, RCOG, NICE).
  • Care for women undergoing medical and surgical treatment of ectopic pregnancy and termination of pregnancy for fetal abnormality.
  • Carry out venepuncture, cannulation, and administration of injections and drugs for medical management (e.g., Mifepristone, Misoprostol, Methotrexate).
  • Assess capacity, obtain valid informed consent, and operate within legal frameworks for patients lacking capacity to consent.
  • Contribute to service development and the implementation of new procedures and gynae services within the unit.
  • Promote patient advocacy, effective communication with other healthcare professionals, and collaborative working across Care Groups and sonographic modalities.
  • Engage in breaking bad news with effective communication and counselling; provide support for patients and relatives with early pregnancy loss.
  • Assess clinical justification for ultrasound referrals, book appointments, and provide reports and fast results delivery to GPs, outpatient clinics, and wards.
  • Maintain nursing records, participate in clinical audits, and promote wellbeing and safety of patients, staff, and visitors.
  • Act as a role model and mentor to learners, including nursing/midwifery students, medical students, trainee doctors, and sonography trainees.
Person Specification

Essential

  • Registered Nurse with current registration
  • Mentorship/Teaching qualification
  • Evidence of continuing clinical and professional development
  • Recognised Ultrasound Qualification/Certification
  • Experience of bereavement care
  • Substantial experience and knowledge of Gynaecology nursing
  • Venepuncture and Cannulation skills
  • Ability to work on own initiative with sound decision-making and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of Gynaecology disorders and Women’s Health issues
  • Data collection and audit skills
  • Clinical assessment skills

Desirable

  • Counselling course or equivalent
  • Quality improvement work
  • Nurse prescribing qualification
  • Completion of a clinical leadership programme or equivalent
Governance
  • Knowledge of clinical nursing issues including statutory frameworks and national policy
  • Understanding of clinical governance and risk management with appropriate monitoring systems
