Job Summary

The AAA Screening Programme Technician will perform ultrasound screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm in community settings across Northamptonshire, Kettering, Corby, Daventry, Peterborough, Leicestershire. The role requires a Level 3 Health Screener Diploma and the ability to work independently, providing patient reassurance, informed consent, and accurate data entry into the national screening database. A full UK driving licence, access to a car and business insurance, and basic fitness to lift and transport the ultrasound equipment are essential.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct ultrasound scans following national protocols and the programme’s standard operating procedures.
  • Identify and document probable abdominal aortic aneurysm findings and communicate results to patients and the screening office.
  • Explain the screening procedure, obtain informed verbal consent, and address patient queries, ensuring comfort and understanding.
  • Maintain and monitor ultrasound equipment, ensuring cleanliness, performing daily and monthly QC checks, and reporting faults.
  • Set up, pack up, and safely store screening equipment at each clinic location.
  • Manage clinical data entry accurately into the national screening database (SMaRT) and analyse scan data to meet quality standards.
  • Handle medical emergencies and incidents professionally, supporting other staff as required.
  • Coordinate visitation to prisons and other specified sites, maintaining full driving licence and insurance requirements.
  • Participate in service reviews, provide feedback for service improvement, and promote the programme within GP surgeries.
  • Maintain professional conduct and represent the Northamptonshire AAA Screening Programme in the community.
Education, Training & Development
  • Educated to a good standard of General Education (minimum 5 GCSEs or equivalent).
  • Willing to undertake the Level 3 Health Screener Diploma (or NAAASP‑approved Health Screener Diploma if not yet achieved) within 12–18 months.
  • Complete the AAA clinical training logbook and assessment record; after qualification the band will rise from 3 to 4.
  • 6‑monthly clinical assessments, annual scanning competence assessment, and AAA‑specific e‑learning every 2 years.
  • Attend conferences, meetings, and training sessions to maintain clinical skills.
Essential Qualifications
  • Qualified Level 3 Health Screener Diploma or equivalent.
  • Good computer literacy, data entry accuracy, and familiarity with NHS systems.
  • Experience of working within a medical or team environment.
  • Clear understanding of patient confidentiality and hospital environment.
  • Valid full UK driving licence with own car and business insurance.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Recent completion of an NAAASP‑approved Health Screener Diploma (within the last 12 months).
  • NVQ 2 in a relevant subject.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and health promotion experience.
  • Experience with data transcription and enthusiasm for screening programmes.
