Consultant Ophthalmologist – Special interest in Paediatrics

This post is to support our large and specialist paediatric unit at Northampton General Hospital. The successful candidate will provide a comprehensive ophthalmic service at Northampton General Hospital and support the county-wide service at Northampton and Daventry. The post holder will lead and develop the service and be an active member of the wider ophthalmology team.

The role suits a forward‑thinking individual wishing to further their career in ophthalmology. Participation in research and clinical audit is essential.

Applicants must hold FRCOphth or an equivalent qualification and be on the GMC specialist register or obtain a relevant CCT within 6 months of interview.

Responsible for providing a paediatric ophthalmology service and general ophthalmology service where required, proficiency in cataract surgery and commitment to training are essential. On‑call for paediatrics is 24/7; contact via phone/text/email is usually within office hours.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Responsibility for patients in care and proper functioning of the department
  • Teaching duties, postgraduate medical education programme, and training of ophthalmic trainees
  • Teaching and training of nursing staff and other healthcare professionals
  • Participation in departmental educational meetings
  • Active role in the clinical audit programme and regional/national audits
  • Reporting critical incidents and supporting departmental audit and clinical governance meetings
  • Commitment to service development and generating revenue for the Trust through innovative practice

Applicants must have a serviceable vehicle and a valid driving licence.
