Position: Bridge Inspection Mechanic (Motor Equipment Mechanic III)

Overview

Position Summary

This position functions as the Mechanic and Back-Up Operator for the Under-Bridge Aerial Lift used in the District Bridge Inspection Unit. It provides support for the Inspection Teams and serves as a required crew member to operate the UBIU (Snooper). The incumbent is responsible for troubleshooting, road testing, maintenance, and repair of the Under-Bridge Aerial Lift, as well as other vehicles, lifts, arrow boards, and boats used in the Bridge Inspection Unit and the District.

The role includes scheduling and performing routine maintenance/repairs per manufacturer and MassDOT requirements, ensuring all maintenance and repair documentation is current, and ensuring the Under-Bridge Aerial Lift is ready on a 24-hour basis.

Bridge Inspection Motor Equipment Mechanic works in all weather and in conditions that may involve exposure to live traffic, railroad corridors, fumes, loud sounds, high altitudes, and hazardous environments. The work may require hand tools, lifting and carrying heavy objects, varied shifts (including weekends, holidays, nights), and may be performed in emergency or weather-related situations. The role may involve clearing growth to access bridge sites and removing obstructions that affect visibility of posted signs.

The incumbent must have and maintain a valid Massachusetts CDL Class B License and a Hoisting License 1C or better. The CDL Class B is required at the time of hire; a 6-month period is provided to obtain the Hoisting 1C or better. The incumbent must also complete training to meet ANSI standards. UBIU (Snooper) and personnel must comply with ANSI A92 standards.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Works independently for District 2 Bridge Inspection and assists District 2 Maintenance personnel in the repair and troubleshooting of sweepers, heavy trucks, and equipment when available.

  • Operates the under-bridge aerial lift as needed.

  • Performs skilled mechanical work in maintenance, repair, overhaul, and powered equipment using appropriate test equipment and hand and power tools. Work is performed in MassDOT garages or property.

  • Diagnoses the cause of faulty mechanical performance on gasoline and diesel engines and estimates the extent of needed repairs on engine-powered equipment.

  • Repairs and maintains radiators, cooling systems, engines, valves, bearings, shafts, rings, oil pumps, brake systems, fuel pumps, carburetors, fuel injection systems, and timing mechanisms on gasoline-powered equipment.

  • Repairs and services transmissions (manual and minor automatic) and related components such as clutch assemblies, differentials, transfer cases, torque converters, and gear trains on automobiles, trucks, and construction equipment.

  • Maintains, repairs, diagnoses ignition systems, switches, generators, voltage regulators, alternators, starting motors, air conditioners, and electrical systems on motorized equipment.

  • Maintains, repairs, adjusts, and replaces chassis components including frames, springs, steering, dump bodies, and brakes.

  • Balances wheels, mounts/dismounts tires, and performs tire service on various equipment.

  • Performs body and fender work, including restoration, scraping, treating, spray painting metal surfaces, and removing/repairing/replacing glass, doors, seats, and upholstery.

  • Performs torch cutting of metal parts and equipment.

  • May perform complex mechanical work on diesel engines, hydraulic systems, air conditioning systems, and powertrains.

  • May operate equipment such as honing machines, valve resurfacing machines, drill presses, or grinders.

  • Obtains parts and supplies from stock and initiates requests for special replacements as required for assigned repair work.

  • Maintains time and cost distribution records related to motor equipment maintenance and repair as required.

  • Drives passenger cars, trucks, and other MassDOT equipment as necessary.

  • Must be available for scheduled overtime work and/or emergency conditions.

  • Maintains service records and equipment documentation.
