Description
Position Summary
This position functions as the Mechanic and Back-Up Operator for the Under-Bridge Aerial Lift used in the District Bridge Inspection Unit and focused on support for the Inspection Teams and as a required crew member to operate the UBIU (Snooper). This person will be responsible for troubleshooting, road testing, maintenance and repair of the Under-Bridge Aerial Lift, as well as other various vehicles, lifts, arrow boards and boats used in the Bridge Inspection Unit, as well as the District.
The incumbent will schedule and perform routine maintenance/repairs per the manufacturers and MassDOT’s requirements. and of said equipment. This person will also oversee that all documentation relating the maintenance and repairs made on the Bridge Inspection Unit equipment is current and up-to-date and ensure the Under Bridge Aerial Lift is ready on a 24-hour a day basis.
Bridge Inspection Motor Equipment Mechanic works in all types of weather such as hot, cold, wet, dry and humid, lighting conditions and under exposure to such hazardous conditions as those found at bridge sites, including adjacent to live traffic or within active railroad corridors and exposure to fumes, loud sounds and may travel for job related purposes. Their work also requires exposure to high altitudes.
In addition, their work may require the use of hand tools and lift and carry heavy objects; may work varied shifts, weekends, holidays, nights; and may be called upon in emergency/weather related situations. In addition, employees may be required to cut away or remove natural growth that may hamper access to the bridge site, and remove any obstruction that prohibits proper visibility of bridge posted signs.
The incumbent must have and maintain a valid Massachusetts CDL Class B License and a Hoisting License 1C or better. The incumbent must have the CDL Class B at the time of hire. The incumbent will be allowed 6 months, from the time from being selected for this position, to obtain the Hoisting 1C or better.
The incumbent will also need to complete proper training to meet ANSI standards.
UBIU (Snooper) and personnel must be kept in compliance with ANSI A92 standards
Duties and Responsibilities- Inspection and Maintenance
Work Details
- Works independently for District 2 Bridge Inspection and assists District 2 Maintenance personnel in the repair and troubleshooting of sweepers, heavy trucks, and equipment when available.
- Operates the under-bridge aerial lift as needed.
- With little or no guidance or assistance, performs skilled mechanical work in the maintenance, repair, overhaul, and powered equipment with the use of appropriate test equipment and hand and power tools. Work to be performed in MassDOT garages or property.
- Diagnoses the cause of faulty mechanical performance on gasoline and diesel engines and estimates the extent of needed repairs on gasoline and similar powered equipment such as passenger vehicles, trucks, and other equipment.
- Repairs and maintains radiators, cooling systems and engines including valves, bearings, shafts, rings, oil pumps, brake systems, fuel pumps, carburetors, gasoline or diesel fuel injections systems and timing mechanisms on gasoline powered equipment.
- Repairs and services conventional transmissions and make minor adjustments to automatic transmissions. Repairs and services clutch assemblies, differentials, transfer cases, torque converters and gear trains on automobiles, trucks and construction equipment.
- Maintains, repairs, and performs diagnostics functions on ignitions systems, switches, generators, and voltage regulators, alternators, starting motors, air conditioners and electrical systems on all types of motorized equipment.
- Maintains, repairs, adjusts, and replaces elements of chassis assembly including frames, springs, steering, dump bodies and brakes.
