The Department of Film and Media Studies at Smith College invites applications for a two-year, benefits-eligible position at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor to begin July 1, 2026.
Teaching responsibilities for this position may include introductory and advanced video production courses, screenwriting, and other production courses in the candidate’s field of specialization. We seek candidates with an active creative practice in film/video, college-level teaching experience, and a strong command of video production equipment and software. The successful candidate will offer three courses per year and will oversee the department’s video production equipment inventory and facilities, with student worker support (VAPs at Smith normally teach five courses per year;
this position provides two course releases as compensation for equipment, facilities, and student worker management).
Strong foundations in either documentary or narrative production are required, and experience in equipment and facility management is especially encouraged. A master’s degree (MFA) is expected by the time of appointment. Candidates from groups underrepresented in Film and Media Studies are encouraged to apply.
In addition to a competitive benefits package, the starting pay range for this position is typically between $74,200 and $76,200. Actual compensation will vary based on individual qualifications.
