Position Title

Assistant Professor of Latin American & Latino/a/x Studies

Overview

The Latin American and Latino/a Studies Program at Smith College invites applications for a tenure-track position in Latinx Studies at the rank of Advanced Assistant Professor to begin July 1st, 2026. A Ph.D. in the social sciences or Latinx Studies, two years of full-time teaching experience or the equivalent at the rank of Instructor or above, and a robust publication record and/or plan are required.

Responsibilities
  • Engage actively with diverse students across the liberal arts.
  • Deliver an introductory Latinx Studies course (100-level) and 200- and 300-level colloquiums and seminars related to the candidate’s field of specialization.
  • Participate in departmental service, profession-wide service, and community engagement activities.
Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in the social sciences or Latinx Studies.
  • Two years of full-time teaching experience or equivalent at the rank of Instructor or above.
  • Robust publication record and/or research plan grounded in social sciences and biopolitics.
  • Research interests aligned with social processes such as migration governance, urban geographies, gender and sexuality economies, reproductive rights and public health, technology interventions, ecological human/more-than-human studies, or biopower structures.
Benefits & Salary

Pay for newly-hired assistant professors with a terminal degree beginning the first year of the tenure clock in Fall 2026 is typically between $92,. Salary decisions are dependent on several factors, including teaching and work experience beyond the terminal degree, market, disciplinary, and internal peer equity factors.
