Our Service

The Traffic Engineering Team forms part of the Network Strategy Group within the Highways and Transportation Service Unit. We deliver capital‑funded local safety schemes aimed at reducing casualties and conduct road safety audits, fatal collision inspections, and policy updates. We also improve traffic signal installations and maintenance and provide parking expertise across the county.

The Role

You will identify and develop Local Safety and Collision Prevention Schemes and assist with Road Safety Audits and Fatal Collision Inspections. Your tasks include:

  • Contributing to the preparation and consultation of scheme design within the Integrated Transport Capital Programme.
  • Assisting with the design of traffic engineering measures, including road safety, traffic management and parking studies.
  • Contributing to the preparation of traffic sign design and schedules.

You will also ensure schemes comply with the Local Transport Plan, draft Speed Limit Traffic Regulation Orders under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, and coordinate ordering of replacement street nameplates.

Travel is required; a valid driving licence is mandatory.

Qualifications

Grade G:

  • Working knowledge of legislation relating to traffic signs, lines and traffic calming.
  • Experience in collision investigation studies and safety schemes.
  • Experience with in a highways‑related role.
  • Experience using ACAD.
  • Year 1 of Civil Engineering HND/C or equivalent completed.

Grade H (additional):

  • Working knowledge of legislation relating to traffic signs, lines and traffic calming.
  • Collision investigation studies and safety schemes experience.
  • Understanding of local government administrative and financial procedures.
  • Experience in the use of CAD.
  • ONC in Civil Engineering or equivalent.
  • First year on HND/C in Civil Engineering completed and willingness to continue to year 2.
