The Marine Technicianrolepresents  a tremendous career growth opportunity to play a key role in the ongoing development of our team and will receive excellent mentorship from experienced environmental professionals. The ideal candidate will have amarineecologyorbiologybackground. Project assignments will cross several industry sectors (e.g.,marineand coastal restoration and development, infrastructure,tunnelling, renewable energy,portsand terminals,etc.). This position will be based out of Hatfield’sNorth Vancouver office and may require travel throughout Western Canada.

Responsibilities
  • Participation in environmental surveysandmonitoringstudies, focusing on marine ecology,fishand fish habitat(e.g., saltmarsh, eelgrass, kelp), waterandsediment quality, benthic invertebratecommunitiesor other related elements of the marine environment.
  • Working as an Environmental Monitor, typically on marine related construction projects.
  • Assistin data collection,entry,quality control,analysis,and interpretation for report preparation.
  • Preparation of permit applications and associated documentation.
  • Literature and data review,collation,and communication ofreview/research to peers.
  • Engage with marine and management teams on a variety of projects.
Education and Experience
  • Completed BSc or BA in marine biology or ecology, or equivalent with appropriate qualifications for work in BC.
  • 1+ years of relevant work experience.
  • Experienceinscientific writing,scientific datacollectionandrelevant field techniques.
  • Training or courses relating todata analysis,environmental assessmentsandpermitting in BC.
  • A valid Canadian driver’s license for the past three years, experience driving a pickup truck and the ability to meet the requirements for ourthird party automobile insurance policy.
  • Relevant professional certification (e.g.,RBTech/BiT/RPBio,AAg/PAg,EPt/EP,etc.) or ability to obtain is an asset.
Other Assets/Skills
  • Ability to work within diverse teams andmaintaina positive attitude.
  • Ability and interest to undertake extensive fieldwork, in a range of weather conditions, including potentially working in remote locations.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic consulting environment that requires flexibility and the willingness to potentially workadditionalor non-standard hours.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and technical writing) skills and time management.
  • Attention to detail and an understanding of the importance of adherence to standard operating procedures and data collection, management, and analysis standards.
  • A focus on health,safetyand quality.
  • An understanding of environmental legislation, regulations,permitting processes, guidancedocumentsand Best Management Practices in BC.
  • Other experience or interests that would be an asset include:
    • strong identification skills of BC marine flora and fauna;
    • CAUS or occupational SCUBA (or ability to easily obtain);
    • boat driving experience (on rivers and ocean);
    • SVOP, MED A3 (or equivalent), ROC-M, Marine Basic First Aid;
    • experience trailering a boat;
    • construction environmental monitoring;
    • hydroacoustic monitoring;
    • marine mammal monitoring;
    • marine fish and fish habitat assessments;
    • marine invertebrate assessments;
    • sediment and water quality sampling; and
    • environmental effects monitoring and reporting.
