About

The Role

The Thrift Store Assistant supports the day-to-day operations of the SCCSS Thrift Store and helps create a warm, welcoming, and inclusive retail environment for customers, donors, clients, and volunteers. This role plays a key part in ensuring smooth store operations and positive customer experiences. The position reports to the Lead – Volunteer Program and Navigation Services.

What You’ll Do
  • Operate the till; receive and process cash, debit, and credit transactions
  • Provide exceptional customer service; assist customers in locating items and answering inquiries
  • Support creative merchandising, inventory rotation, and store presentation
  • Assist with daily cash-in and cash-out procedures
  • Engage, support, and collaborate with volunteers to build a positive team environment
  • Receive, organize, and sort incoming donations
  • Support online sales processes and general store operations
  • Identify recyclable materials and contribute to environmentally responsible practices
  • Perform general store duties that contribute to smooth and efficient operations
  • Demonstrate excellent service and professionalism when assisting customers and donors
  • Perform other related duties as required
What You Bring
  • Experience in retail, customer service, or sales, with a strong customer-service–focused mindset
  • Secondary school education (Grade 12 completion or equivalent is required)
  • A genuine interest in working with volunteers and creating a positive team dynamic
  • Knowledge of (or willingness to learn about) non-profits, social enterprise, and recycling/upcycling
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Willingness to learn, be creative, and adapt to changing situations
  • Ability to multitask and manage priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Knowledge of universal safety precautions
  • Ability to maintain an inclusive, non-judgmental, and welcoming approach to all visitors, volunteers, and staff
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a collaborative approach to supporting customers and volunteers

Additional Requirements
  • Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check (CRC) for working with vulnerable populations
  • Ability to lift and carry items up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to perform frequent physical activities, including standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, squatting, kneeling, pushing, pulling, climbing ladders, and repetitive hand motions
  • Comfortable working in a busy retail environment
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
