Are you interested in joining a top engineering consulting firm that adds value for clients, communities, and individuals around the globe? Can you apply your leadership skills effectively to regional and international underground structures and tunnels? Then this could be the next step in your career!

Create the solutions that will enable a better tomorrow

We are looking for a Leading Geotechnical Engineer to join our global team of experts and work within a functional team that is responsible for performing engineering analysis, design, and technical reports and drawings for tunnels and various underground structures, such as deep shafts, cut-and-cover structures, and mined tunnels and caverns for metro transit, infrastructure, bridges, or hydroelectric power projects. In this role, you will be responsible for working with multidisciplinary teams and effectively managing and delivering your own tasks in terms of budget, quality, and timelines.

Initially, this position specifically supports COWI’s role as the Owner’s Engineer for the Immersed Tube Tunnel portion of the new Fraser River Tunnel Project (FRTP). The FRTP project, which will replace the existing Massey Tunnel between Richmond and Delta, near Vancouver, BC, is being delivered through a Progressive Design-Build procurement. The ideal candidate will be the Coordination Lead for the geotechnical and seismic disciplines.

In this role, the Coordination Lead will support the FRTP Project Manager in coordinating between the Client and Design-Builder, and the COWI geotechnical team.

The position will require solid project management and technical skills and will provide opportunities to grow and develop leadership skills.

The position will be based in COWI’s North Vancouver office, and a significant portion of the time is expected to be spent in the Client’s project office, located in downtown Vancouver.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Coordinate the work of the geotechnical and seismic team for COWI as part of the FRTP project
  • Collaborate closely with the Client, Owner’s Engineer Team, Design-Builder, Designer, and other Stakeholders during the design development
  • Act as the coordinating professional to direct COWI’s work in geotechnical engineering, along with being responsible for accurate forecasting, scheduling, and budgeting for the assigned tasks.
  • Contribute specialized skills to the FRTP project and other assigned projects, ensuring adherence to quality systems and effective communication with internal and external stakeholders
  • Perform & review engineering analyses and design with a focus on seismic analysis and soil-structure interactions for retaining walls, foundations, underground structures, and marine structures
  • Classify, interpret, and characterize ground conditions from geotechnical data for the design of different structures, including retaining walls, foundations, underground structures, and marine structures
  • Contribute to production, review ,and approval of design deliverables such as technical memoranda, geotechnical design reports, geotechnical interpretative reports, and construction drawings
  • Provide input in digital delivery and information management of various projects from conception through to completion
  • Your skills. Our team. Together we design the future.

The first step to success in this role is that you are eager to collaborate with the people around you, whether they are colleagues, partners, or customers. Developing ties with others is something you do by acting respectfully and delivering on your promises. And you never get set in your ways but keep exploring new insights and ways to improve.

On top of that, you will have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or Rock Mechanics
  • A registered Professional Engineer License (P.Eng.) in BC
  • A minimum of 15 years’ experience working with project design in carrying out engineering and seismic analysis and design of foundations, tunnels, caverns, and underground structures in the Architectural/Engineering/Construction industry
  • Experience and familiarity with regional codes (North America)
  • Basic knowledge of typical BIM and parametric design software, such as, AutoCAD, Dynamo, Grasshopper, etc., and design software, such as RS2/3, SWEDGE, UNWEDGE, DIPS, UDEC, FLAC/FLAC3D, Plaxis 2D/3D, Sofistik, etc.
