Location: Sechelt

The Position

The shíshálh Nation is seeking a patient, perceptive, and capable After-School Math Tutor to support students in Grades 8–12 through a Purposeful Community-Based Learning (PCBL) approach. This role is about more than completing homework—it is about strengthening foundational skills, building confidence, and supporting students within their broader community context.

You will work one-on-one and in small groups, meeting students where they are academically and using a blend of instructional strategies, culturally responsive practices, and supportive technology to help learners move forward.

Note:

This is a part-time position with hours from 3:30 pm – 5:30 pm.

The Candidate:

  • Provide math tutoring support for students in Grades 8–12.
  • Work with students one-on-one and in small group settings.
  • Assess student understanding and identify learning gaps.
  • Adapt instruction to meet individual student needs and learning styles.
  • Use educational technology and digital tools to support math learning.
  • Align tutoring with the BC Curriculum.
  • Support confidence, problem-solving skills, and positive learner identity.
  • Create a supportive, respectful, and culturally responsive learning environment.
  • Communicate student progress and needs with program staff as required.
  • Perform all other tasks within the scope of the position and as required.
Qualifications,

Skills and Abilities:
  • A bachelor’s degree in math, teaching, etc., is preferred.
  • Strong grasp of Grades 8–12 mathematics.
  • Experience tutoring or teaching students individually or in small groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess learners and meet them where they are.
  • Working knowledge of technology that supports math learning.
  • Understanding of the BC Curriculum.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Patience, flexibility, and a learner-centred approach.
  • Background in education, mathematics, or a related field.
  • Experience working with Indigenous learners and communities.
  • Familiarity with Purposeful Community-Based Learning or land-based learning approaches.
  • Experience using digital learning platforms or assistive technologies.
  • Ability to lead with cultural humility, integrity, and alignment with shíshálh values and principles.
  • A valid Driver’s license and an acceptable Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search.
