The swiya of the shíshálh people lies between Queens Reach in Jervis Inlet and Howe Sound on the south coast of British Columbia. Foundational to our shared work is the protection, promotion and practice of shíshálh culture, language and laws within our swiya.
Reporting to the Education Division Manager or designate, the position is responsible for the overall administration, coordination, development, and support in implementing the Post Secondary Student Support Program (PSSSP) for students & adult members of the shíshálh Nation. This includes assisting the Education Manager in implementing and adhering to the Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) Post-Secondary Student Support Program (PSSSP), including assisting clients with applications for sponsorship funding and living allowance payments for full-time students.
Maintaining and respecting the client’s privacy and confidentiality is a requirement of the ETAPS Post Secondary Coordinator.
- Meet with prospective students to determine their educational or career goals and develop action plans.
- Meet with high school students and work with our K-12 Department and SD46 staff to ensure students have the prerequisites to apply for programs.
- Maintain spreadsheets and keep files up to date.
- Assist clients in filling out appropriate ETAPS Post-Secondary application forms.
- Help clients seek new employment opportunities: assist with resumes/cover letters and interview preparation when the student specifically wants to pursue post-secondary formal Education. Other clients are supported by the ETAPS Indigenous Skills Education and Training (ISET) and Adult Education Coordinator. Be a backup to this position and assist as needed.
- Arrange sponsorship for approved clients for tuition and textbooks and perform mid-term check-ins.
- Process monthly training/living allowances.
- Attend Integrated Case Management meetings and maintain client privacy and confidentiality.
- Liaise, network and maintain relationships with external agencies to actively promote educational opportunities.
- Schedule meetings, attend meetings and take minutes as required.
- Support the Summer Work Program and Career Fairs.
- Perform all other tasks within the scope of the position as required and requested.
Qualifications,
Skills and Abilities:
- At least a Bachelor's degree, possibly in Education, Business or Counselling, is preferred.
- Work experience in a related field may also be desirable.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- The ability to handle a variety of tasks, prioritize and problem-solve.
- Proficient with MS Office programs, particularly Word, Excel, and Outlook, with a willingness to learn other programs. Good spreadsheet and database management skills.
- Good organizational and time management skills and the ability to be flexible to meet changing priorities.
- Ability to maintain a high level of accuracy and to handle sensitive & confidential information appropriately. Physical and mental ability to perform the duties of the position.
- Willingness to learn about shíshálh cultural protocols and traditions.
- A valid driver’s license and a clean Criminal Record Check.
