The swiya of the shíshálh people lies between Queens Reach in Jervis Inlet and Howe Sound on the south coast of British Columbia. Historically there were four main settlements at kalpilin (Pender Harbour), ts’unay (Deserted Bay), xenichen (Jervis Inlet) and tewankw near Porpoise Bay. shíshálh Nation is committed to innovation in program and service delivery designed to assist our members and community to achieve greater independence, wellness and self-sufficiency.
Foundational to our shared work is the protection, promotion and practice of shíshálh culture, language and laws within our swiya.
The Early Childhood Educator Assistant will provide quality, inclusive childcare programming and supervision for young children in a group setting. This position will be responsible for guiding and instructing children in a variety of educational subjects and life skills. In addition, the ECE Assistant will assist children with nurturing developmental and cognitive skills such as physical, mental, and social development. This position performs other tasks as assigned and as directed by the immediate supervisor.
Note:
This is a one-year term position with an opportunity to extend.
Candidate:
- Plan, carry out, and assess developmentally appropriate activities and experiences in harmony with the centre’s philosophy.
- Provide a daily balance of active/quiet, indoor/outdoor, and individual/group activities.
- Establish and carry out a daily activity schedule that incorporates child-directed activity, care routines and transition times.
- Organize space, equipment and materials before activities.
- Assist children in expressing themselves by listening and responding with questions or comments that extend conversations.
- Use a variety of teaching techniques, including modelling, observing, questioning, demonstrating, and reinforcing.
- Observation and Documentation on a daily basis.
- Encourage and assist children to practice self-help daily.
- Plan and carry out experiences that foster an understanding of a variety of cultures and value systems.
- Plan and carry out activities that encourage problem-solving.
- Provide experiences and play materials that actively promote diversity and acceptance in interactions and attitudes.
Qualifications,
Skills and Abilities:
- Early Childhood Educator Assistant Certificate (or in the process of completing).
- Valid ECEA License – registered in BC- which must be maintained throughout the duration of employment.
- At least 1 year of experience in a daycare setting.
- Valid CPR and First Aid certificate.
- Knowledge and understanding of the Community Care and Assisted Living Act and Child Care Licensing Regulations.
- An understanding of the issues that affect First Nation children and their families. li>Excellent interpersonal skills with parents and community members.
- Mature and responsible attitude toward work.
- Willingness to work flexible hours.
- Negative criminal records check with the vulnerable sector.
