Overview

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to expand its Diabetes and Endocrinology services as part of its 10-year strategy. The post is for full-time Consultant Physicians, with consideration for less than full-time applicants. The role can be based at North Tyneside General Hospital or Wansbeck General Hospital (to be confirmed) but will be trust-wide with clinics on other trust sites.

Responsibilities and Duties

The successful applicants will:

  • Provide diabetes, endocrinology and general medical services to the Northumbria population and develop a sub-specialist interest to compliment the department.
  • Provide continuing clinical responsibility for patients under their care and facilitate contact from staff with delegated duties for patient care.
  • Provide educational and clinical supervision to trainees in specialty and general medicine.
  • Participate in clinical audits and clinical governance; contribute to quality improvement activities.
  • Work to a job plan designed around 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) with 1.5 SPAs for Supported Professional Activities; additional SPAs may be available depending on service need.
  • Participate in cover arrangements for annual, sickness and study leave, and contribute to the acute general medicine rota including out-of-hours duties at the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital (current structure: 1 in 7 weekends).
  • Be flexible with timing and location of sessions as service develops.

Applicant Requirements

You must have appropriate UK professional registration. The post is subject to Disclosure via the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Fit and Proper Person Requirements (FPPR) validation will require additional pre-employment checks in line with CQC and NHS England guidance.

DBS:
It is a requirement that successful applicants pay for their own DBS certification if required; the cost will be deducted from the first monthly pay.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Fully registered on the UK General Medical Council's Specialist Register for Diabetes, Endocrinology and General Internal Medicine (Specialist Registrars may apply if within 6 months of CCT at date of interview)
  • Full accreditation with the appropriate Royal College
  • Full GMC Registration

Desirable criteria

  • Educational qualification (as applicable)
Experience & Knowledge

Essential criteria

  • Clinical training and experience in Diabetes, Endocrinology and General Internal Medicine, equivalent to UK CCT entry requirements
  • Experience of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff
  • Experience of medical audit and quality improvement

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of administration and management
  • Teaching of non-medical health professionals
