Occupational Therapist PRN/PT (Healthcare)

Evaluate patients within twenty-four (24) hours, or 1 business day of physician referral. If unable to complete evaluation in 24 hours, documentation in medical record must clearly define the cause for delay.

Develop effective treatment plans and obtain approval from the referring physician. Treat patients according to the physician treatment plan. Assist the nursing department with training Restorative Aides. Supervise Occupational Therapy Assistants in direct patient care and related activities, following state practice acts.

Communicate with supervisors and other health team members regarding patient progress, problems, and plans. Participate in Patient Care Conferences, Utilization Review meetings, and Rehabilitation Conferences as needed. Provide in-service training for staff in the facility.

Record evaluations, daily treatment notes, weekly progress notes, and recertification documentation in accordance with Occupational Therapy Board State Practice Act and governmental and third-party payer requirements. Document treatment changes per policies and procedures.

Instruct patients’ families or nursing staff in maintenance programs and caregiver training in preparation for discharge from therapy services. Participate in discharge planning.

Recommend and facilitate the ordering of necessary durable medical equipment (e.g., braces, walkers, canes, elevated toilet seats, grab bars) to promote patient independence. Report any equipment issues to ensure proper maintenance.

Maintain positive, effective, and appropriate relationships with patients, families, staff, and colleagues.

Supervisory Requirements: Supervise Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants (COTAs), aides, and students.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Therapy;
    Master’s or Doctorate preferred.
  • Proficient in computer skills, including data entry into programs like Casamba and Point Click Care.
  • Ability to read technical procedures and policy manuals.
  • Excellent communication skills for presenting information and responding to questions.
  • Ability to apply mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
  • Strong reasoning skills to solve practical problems and interpret instructions.
  • Licensed as an Occupational Therapist in the state; must meet continuing education requirements and maintain licensure in good standing.

Physical Demands: Frequent standing, walking, reaching, pushing/pulling, talking, and smelling. Ability to exert significant force occasionally and frequently, with occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception.

Work Environment: Usually low to moderate noise level. Reasonable accommodations available for individuals with disabilities.
