Overview

Department:

As the Children’s Librarian for Shannon Staub Public Library, you will be a big influence on the younger generations of Sarasota County. You will be directing the Children's Collection, participating in community outreach within local schools focusing on grade levels 1st through 6th, and planning and implementing all children's programming. This position builds partnerships with local non-profits, local youth agencies, and other government entities to help connect with the children of the community.

This is professional level work supporting, coordinating or leading Youth Services programs/projects, teaching and coaching of staff and citizens, providing customer service, conducting research, performing analytical type work and coordinating collections. While the primary focus will be leadership in Youth Services, the librarian will also work with youth and adults in intergenerational programming. In a team environment, employees participate in setting unit, library, and system goals, contribute to decision making and evaluation of progress, and collaborate with co-workers to support the team process.

Responsibilities
  • Customer Service:
    Implements standards of service that ensure the prompt and efficient resolution of each inquiry by internal and external customers, delivered with the utmost courtesy and respect.
  • Outreach and Partnerships:
    Establishes liaisons and performs outreach activities with organizations, agencies, day cares, schools, and home school providers to promote library services and facilitate programming and service delivery.
  • Professional Practice:
    Keeps abreast of developments, trends, best practices, and innovations in libraries; represents Sarasota County to library users.
  • Public Service:
    Assists customers, responds to requests and monitors progress of requests; creates a user-friendly and safe environment; assesses risk and safety issues.
  • Collaboration:

    Participates collaboratively in all areas of library services; interprets objectives, policies and procedures for staff and the public; participates in trainings, community meetings, and activities of library groups.
  • Presentations:
    Conducts presentations to BCC, community and at professional events.
  • Programming:
    Provides formal/informal instruction on use of library resources; initiates, designs, facilitates and evaluates education and literacy programs with emphasis on STEAM; writes and develops book reviews, promotional materials, fliers, book lists, and web content.
  • Collection Development:
    Assists in material selection and weeding; makes acquisition recommendations; administers special collections; maintains awareness of literature related to current best practices and future trends.
  • Administration:
    Designs data collection processes; integrates research and monitors patterns into planning; develops and evaluates policies and procedures; collaborates with internal services to manage operational issues and form strategic partnerships; participates in planning and budget development; compiles and analyzes statistical and budget information.
  • Staff Development:
    Guides and facilitates self-directed work teams; participates in selection and training of staff and volunteers; provides opportunities for ongoing professional development; stays informed about current youth resources; cross-trains with other sections.
  • Other:
    Develops strategies to meet evolving youth community needs and supports cross-training opportunities.
Qualifications
  • Minimum Qualifications:

    A Master’s Degree in Library Science (MLS) from an ALA-accredited college/university with experience in a public library including supervisory experience preferred OR a Bachelor’s Degree and enrollment in an MLS/MLIS program with the ability to obtain an MLS/MLIS within six months from date of hire.
  • Preferred Qualifications:

    One year of experience in a library environment is preferred.
