Physician-Psychiatrist – U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs
Salary approved by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Base pay range: $/yr – $/yr.
SummaryThis position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit an EDRP application within four months of appointment. Award amounts (up to $200,000) and eligibility periods (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review.
Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
Applicants must meet the basic requirements as described below. Pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but can only be hired after all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements- United States Citizenship (Non-citizens only when no qualified citizens can be recruited per VA policy).
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent (DO) from an approved VA school.
- Full and unrestricted medical or surgical license in any U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
- Completed residency in an accredited core specialty training program approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs (ACGME or AOA).
- Residency may also include other programs with a minimum of five years of U.S. practice deemed adequate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee.
- Resident physicians in accredited programs may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) on an intermittent or fee‑basis, provided they have a full license and are not independent practitioners.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Physical ability to lift under 15 pounds, carry under 15 pounds, reach, walk, and stand for up to an hour.
- Provide diagnostic assessments, medication evaluation and management, suicide risk assessments, crisis intervention, psychotherapy, and overall care for veterans with psychiatric disorders.
- Utilize modalities including face‑to‑face, video teleconference, and telephone clinics.
- Maintain compliance with TJC, CARF, HIPAA, VA policies, clinical practice guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure accurate and timely completion of medical records, progress notes, consults, history and physicals, and discharge summaries.
- Collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary team members to coordinate comprehensive patient care.
- Engage families in education, counseling, and preventive care discussions.
- Initiate consultations and referrals to other services as indicated.
- Accept and manage calls from other psychiatric services, emergency department, and the hospital.
- Participate in education and training of psychiatry residents, medical students, psychology interns, and allied health trainees.
- May perform research projects if time permits.
- Rotate with other physicians for weekend/holiday patient coverage.
- Work schedule:
Monday—Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
