Job Description

The Technologies and Operations organization is looking for a highly motivated Technician to collaborate in design, development, characterization, and fielding of diagnostic systems on high‑stakes experiments conducted at U1a, located at the Nevada National Security Site. This role reports primarily to the NNSS and supports fielding of a wide variety of diagnostic detection and recording systems, with an emphasis on practical electro‑optical applications.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work with engineers and scientists in the development and fielding of electrical, optical, and laser diagnostic data acquisition systems.
  • Operate diagnostic equipment such as oscilloscopes, function generators, delay generators, spectrum analyzers, fiber‑optic inspection and cleaning equipment, optical time‑domain reflectometers, scientific cameras, and more.
  • Assist in compiling system documentation, supporting and researching data acquisition capabilities, and analyzing technical data.
  • Participate as a contributing team member on specific event diagnostics, as skills and experience permit.
  • Adapt to diverse and dynamic field environments as part of fielding support.
  • Perform basic electronic work and optical work, including fiber optics.
  • Assist in the preparation of reports, graphs, proposals, studies, and correspondence.
  • Contribute to preliminary engineering analysis, conceptual design, and engineering calculations; review project design and technical documents.
  • Perform drafting assignments, revise prints, and prepare sketches as needed.
  • Willingness to work within established work controls and safety standards for electrical and laser work when operating or testing equipment.
  • Perform other duties assigned by Management.
Qualifications
  • Associate degree in a field related to the position with at least 3 years of progressive related experience, or high school diploma with 5 years of progressive related experience.
  • Experience with electrical components, circuitry, hand wiring of circuit boards, soldering, AC/DC electronics, basic hand tools, and electronic test and measurement equipment.
  • Ability to work underground.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work well with others and interface with team members, other teams, and outside organizations.
  • Planned and organized, able to employ independent judgment to meet requirements efficiently and on time.
  • Ability to manage pressures of deadlines and multiple tasks.
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary team environments with scientists, engineers, technicians, and designers.
  • Capability to work under minimal supervision in a dynamic project environment with simultaneous performance, cost, and schedule commitments.
  • Proficiency with standard office software.
  • Compliance with written and verbal instructions; disciplined work practices aligned with laws, codes, orders, and MSTS policies.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Pre‑placement physical examination including a drug screen; adherence to MSTS substance‑abuse policy and DOE background checks for security clearance.
Job Details

Location:

Nevada National Security Site, 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada; occasional travel to the North Las Vegas Facility.

Work schedule:

Four 10‑hour days, Monday–Thursday (subject to change).

Hourly range: $29.33 – $44.00
. Starting salary determined by market value, candidate education, experience, and internal equity.

MSTS requires U.S. citizenship and a DOE Q‑level security clearance. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information, including drug testing and background investigations.
