Job Description

Ulbrich Stainless Steels & Special Metals, Inc. is seeking a Manufacturing Process Engineer/Metallurgist at our Ulbrich Shaped Wire division in North Haven, CT. The Manufacturing Process Engineer/Metallurgist will be responsible for developing and improving manufacturing processes for round, flat and shaped wire profiles by studying product and manufacturing methods. They will leverage knowledge of engineering principles and internal capabilities to support process development and design of new and existing products.

This is not a remote position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, develop and work on manufacturing processes by designing and conducting research programs, applying knowledge of product design, fabrication, tooling, and materials; conferring with equipment vendors and soliciting observations from operators;
  • Create and oversee standardized production procedures by utilizing process simulation software to help optimize process routing, efficiencies and tooling requirements;
  • Conduct studies of metals and alloys to determine their physical characteristics for manufacturing purposes or determine compliance with manufacturing specifications and standards;
  • Improve and develop existing systems for reporting and analyzing data;
  • Maintain all documentation for products, such as work instructions, routings and revision drawings and determining ways to minimize operating costs, such as equipment justification to enhance performance;
  • Analyze existing product forms and assist with the quoting and development phases of redesigns;
  • Develop best practices, routines and innovative solutions to improve production rates and quality of output;
  • Improve manufacturing efficiency by analyzing and planning workflow, space requirements, and equipment layout;
  • Assure product and process quality by designing testing methods; testing finished product and process capabilities; establishing standards; confirming manufacturing processes;
  • Provide manufacturing decision‑making information by calculating production, labor and material costs; reviewing production schedules; estimating future requirements;
  • Prepare product and process reports by collecting, analyzing and summarizing information and trends;
  • Provide technical input on equipment by recommending maintenance and repair services, following manufacturer’s instructions and established procedures;
  • Maintain product and process database;
  • Train and guide technicians on the design and development of projects;
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending industry trade shows, maintaining vendor relationships, and visiting customers when necessary;
  • Contribute to team efforts by providing manufacturing engineering information to Commercial and Operations groups as needed;
  • Work closely with tooling department and manufacturing to verify and ensure shaping best practices are met; and
  • Assist with the design and development of new shapes.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering;
    Metallurgy/Materials Science, Mechanical or Industrial preferred.
  • A minimum of 3 years similar experience problem solving in an industrial environment; 2 years of industry experience in a metal production environment preferred; specifically, experience with drawing, rolling, shaping or annealing stainless steel wire.
  • Experience with laboratory equipment and procedures.
  • Familiarity with OEE software and data analysis and analytics.
  • Excellent technical skills including strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities, creativity, understanding of manufacturing processes, and project management skills.
  • Strong communication skills, verbal and written, required.
  • Experience working directly with customers and interpreting prints and industry specifications. Intermediate computer skills, proficient in AutoCAD and Solid Works in 2D.
  • Knowledgeable of Tool & Die terminology and Lean Manufacturing concepts.
  • Must be available for occasional overnight travel, both domestic and international.
