Job Summary

The Nursing Assistant (NA) serves as caregiver to the resident during the scheduled work period in long‑term care. Provides resident‑centered nursing care and daily living assistance to assigned resident under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN). Knowledge of and delivers age‑appropriate care related to the physical and psychological needs of the resident as per care plan. The NA is a member of the nursing team and is expected to follow infection prevention and control policies and personal protective equipment use.

The NA assists with basic health care needs—including bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing/undressing, obtaining and recording vital signs, and providing psychosocial support to assigned residents. The NA helps residents with transfers, repositioning, walking using correct transfer techniques and equipment and also provides range of motion and passive exercises. The NA completes tasks related to food preparation and dining, while creating a positive dining experience.

The NA assists residents with meals and snacks, provides water and supplements as appropriate. The NA aids providers and nursing staff members with procedures as needed, documents resident interactions and outcomes, communicates resident condition changes to the charge nurse, collects non‑invasive body fluid specimens, gathers vital signs, provides housekeeping and laundry services, and assists with wellness and recreational programs. The NA may participate in departmental or organization committees and task forces as needed.

Qualifications
  • High school graduate or GED (preferred but not required).
  • Minimum age of 16.
  • Prior clinical or nursing assistant experience in long‑term care preferred.
  • Required Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification with the State Board of Nursing, or state‑certified CNA within four months of date into the position by enrolling in a training program or in the process of obtaining certification through endorsement; CNA training and certification provided by facility.
  • Successfully completes yearly department‑specific competency testing and maintains a record of continuing education credits for each year; minimum 12 hours of continuing education annually.
  • Maintains all department‑specific required certifications.
  • When applicable, certified and registered with the Unlicensed Assistive Person (UAP) Registry.
  • Depending on facility and required responsibilities, may be classified as a Sanford Category II driver requiring a motor vehicle report and proof of a valid driver’s license, and must be medically qualified to perform essential driving functions as per Sanford Driving Policy.
