Previous experience of retiring Mainframe Technologies as a Project Manager is essential.

Our client is seeking an experienced Technical Debt Project Manager to lead a high-impact initiative focused on retiring legacy mainframe applications. This role plays a critical part in modernizing the technology landscape by overseeing the decommissioning of 27 applications running on unsupported platforms, including the IBM Z-Series Mainframe.

Project Overview:

As our client moves toward full mainframe retirement, this role will coordinate IT and business stakeholders to migrate or eliminate outdated applications and systems, including COBOL, DB2, and ADABAS environments. You’ll manage solution implementation, data migration, IT process changes, vendor oversight, and resource allocation.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead end-to-end project execution and daily operations for the technical debt reduction effort.
• Collaborate with IT PM and Large Project Oversight PM to align strategy with operational execution.
• Serve as subject matter expert on mainframe system decommissioning, ensuring compliance with regulatory and quality standards.
• Identify and resolve risks, issues, and resource gaps proactively.
• Deliver weekly business-focused project status reports summarizing key milestones, risks, issues, and progress.
• Optimize the use of budget, vendors, and staff to meet project goals efficiently.
• Produce and manage essential project documentation and deliverables including:
• Communication & QA Plans
• Implementation & Support Plans
• Post-Implementation Report & Final Acceptance

Qualifications:

• Proven experience managing large-scale projects involving mainframe application retirement.
• Strong understanding of legacy systems (e.g., IBM Z-Series, COBOL, DB2, ADABAS).
• Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and vendors in high-stakes environments.
• Excellent communication, leadership, and reporting skills.
• Experience delivering high-quality documentation and managing complex migration projects.
