Location: Saint Thomas
The Conservation Enforcement Officer performs duties in enforcing all rules and laws applicable in the protection and preservation of the Natural Environment, Fish and Wildlife and the Boating Safety Laws of the Virgin Islands.
Employee must be qualified peace officer and work on a rotating day and night shift which includes Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Supervision is received from the Director, Bureau of Fish and Wildlife; the Director, Shoreline and Land Management;
Department of Conservation and Cultural Affairs, or their designees within the Bureaus.
- Boards and inspects any boat engaged in hunting, fishing or transporting fishery or wildlife products and to make routine safety checks of any numbered boat on territorial waters.
- Makes arrests for violations of the conservation and boating laws of the territory or rules and regulations of the department of federal agencies.
- Seizes or takes possession of fish and wildlife products which have been unlawfully caught, taken, processed, or which are unlawfully possessed or transported.
- Assists with the collection of samples of shore waters and waters in the vicinity of domestic and industrial discharges in preparation for laboratory analysis.
- Enforces rules and regulations pertaining to hunting and fishing in all territorial lands and waters.
- Works with Police, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Customs Service, and National Park Service and other agencies when required.
- Checks on earth changes for compliance with terns of permit.
- Inspects shorelines to determine if any alterations are being made without the proper permits and inspects all dredging and shoreline activities.
- Inspects shorelines and territorial waters for oil other hazardous materials or pollutants.
- Patrols territorial lands and waters by boat, foot and motor vehicle, to enforce applicable laws and regulations.
- Attends seminars nays and takes job related courses.
- Performs other related duties.
Completion of the twelfth (12th) grade or possession of an equivalency certificate.
Knowledge and Abilities- Knowledge of rules and regulations relative to territorial waters of the Virgin Islands.
- Knowledge of Virgin Islands Laws, relative to Environmental Pollution Control.
- Knowledge of the waters surrounding the U.S. Virgin Islands and backroads and inaccessible areas.
- Knowledge of fish, aquatic products and wildlife of the Virgin Islands.
- Ability to develop skill, in the use of firearms.
- Ability to swim.
- Ability to deal tactfully and impartially with the public.
