POSITION TITLE: Distance Learning Coordinator and Academic Advisor

SUPERVISION: Academic Dean
SUMMARY OF WORK: Sitting Bull College seeks a Distance Learning Coordinator and Academic Advisor who will oversee the development, delivery, compliance, and continuous improvement of distance education programs while providing comprehensive academic advising to on-campus and remote students. This 12 months on campus position supports faculty in online course design and technology integration, ensures quality and accreditation standards are met, and promotes student persistence and completion through culturally responsive advising aligned with the mission of the tribal college.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:- Lead and manage all distance learning initiatives, including online and hybrid course offerings.
- Coordinate semester scheduling of online courses in collaboration with Dean of Academics and Registrar.
- Provide training and ongoing support to faculty in the Learning Management System (LMS) and instructional technologies.
- Ensure distance education courses meet accreditation standards, regular and substantive interaction requirements, and ADA accessibility compliance.
- Develop and maintain policies and procedures related to distance education.
- Monitor online course quality, student engagement, and faculty participation.
- Collect and analyze data related to online enrollment, retention, and course success rates.
- Serve as liaison between faculty, IT, student services, and administration for distance education matters.
- Coordinate proctoring services and online student authentication processes.
- Support grant initiatives and reporting related to distance learning programs.
- Complete reporting needs for NC-SARA compliance.
- Identify and refer students to campus resources including advising, counseling, disability services, and tutoring services.
- Provide individualized academic advising to distance and campus-based students.
- Map degree plans and assist with course registration and academic progression.
- Monitor student academic performance and implement early alert interventions.
- Coordinate orientation and onboarding processes for online students.
- Educate students on institutional policies, graduation requirements, and transfer opportunities.
- Support retention and completion initiatives, particularly for nontraditional and remote learners.
- Communicate effectively with others.
- Provide friendly, helpful customer service to students, clients, and visitors.
- Attend all scheduled college functions and meetings as required.
- Serve on college committees as appointed.
- Promote and participate in student and community activities. (i.e. clubs, AIHEC, cultural events, volunteerism.)
- Promote and recruit students for Sitting Bull College.
- Other duties assigned by the Dean of Academics.
- Bachelor’s degree in education or related field (master’s degree preferred).
- Experience teaching and advising preferred, will train.
- Proficiency with instructional technology and learning management systems.
- Have willingness to work with/or knowledge and experience working with federal and tribal programs.
