Location: New England
This part-time position serves as an academic tutor for the Writing and Academic Support Center (WASC), providing one-on-one and small group, scheduled and drop-in tutoring sessions to all student populations at New England College. The Professional Tutor works with students, faculty members, Student Success Services staff, librarians, mentors, and other members of the New England College community.
- Provide day-to-day academic support to all student populations at NEC, including students with learning disabilities and students for whom English is not their primary language;
- Provide general tutoring in such areas as writing development, time-management, study techniques, testing-taking strategies, and goal-setting processes, as well as subject tutoring in the academic disciplines;
- Promote definable learning strategies which promote academic success and independent learning;
- Tutor in a variety of settings, including individual, group, drop-in, class-visitation, online, and workshops to all student populations at New England College;
- Aid in college-wide efforts to promote retention through student academic success and student engagement within the NEC community;
- Assist with training and overseeing peer (student) tutors;
- Engage in ongoing training and professional development opportunities;
- Operate according to established “systems,” general policies and procedures within the WASC and the umbrella of the Student Success Services;
- Promote and provide additional services within the WASC and the Student Success Services, as well as within the College at large as assigned by the Director;
- Bachelor’s degree in related field
- Strong reading, writing, editing, and proofreading skills
- Knowledge of learning strategies, study skills, and effective academic achievement strategies
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Supervisory skills
- 2-3 years across all areas:
- Teaching diverse student populations
- Teaching with expertise in one or more academic subject areas
- Working with students with learning differences
- Working with ESL students
- Academic counseling/ mentoring/coaching/training/ advising
- Nursing, Science, Business, or Math Expertise
- Library Research Skills
