** STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
** Incumbent will create and maintain a safe, positive learning environment to ensure the holistic development of each student and staff member through cultural, social, spiritual, physical and academic experience. Incumbent will support the Bureau of Indian Education’s mission, which is to provide high quality education opportunities from early childhood through life while considering a tribe’s need for cultural and economic well-being.
In performing this mission, the BIE takes into account the spiritual, mental, physical, and cultural aspects of school-aged children within their family and tribal community. To meet its trust responsibility to Indian Tribes, BIE works to strengthen education opportunities for American Indian students to be successful and competitive globally; to enhance student participation in their tribal communities; and support tribes in nation-building, in development of the next generation of tribal leaders.
Responsibilities:
Serving as a School Social Worker at the Dunseith Day School, the incumbent works within the general social work function supplementing and complementing the guidance role of the Administration, Guidance, Academic and/or vocational staff of the school.
Performs social work as related to the education of students to be served by the school. Contacts parents to promote the physical, social and emotional and psychological well-being of students.
Provides or arranges for family counseling in substance abuse as needed to promote student emotional stability. Arranges alcohol and drug abuse counseling services from other agencies for the family and student as the family situation requires. Will act as a liaison between the school and family to promote an understanding of school policies and relationships and how the two can work together to educate the students involved.
Conducts individual and group guidance/orientation services for new and reentering students to orient them to the advantages, requirements, services and opportunities of the school.
Counsels with parents as needed on substance abuse, careers, education, social interests and/or other similar matters, helping them to explore alternatives.
Collects, organizes and interprets pupil personal data for appraisal purposes. Prepares case summaries, case histories and case studies for professional use. Provides safeguards for the utilization of confidential student data.
Sets up and maintains files and records of individual and group counseling sessions with parents and their children.
Utilizes the services of other disciples and promote the interdisciplinary team approach to problem solving. Act as a Liaison to community referral sources.
As requested, assists with in-service and seminar training sessions. Acts as liaison to community resources.
